Need DL Hotel recommendations

We are headed to CA in september for a 2 week road trip and will be spending a couple of nights in Anaheim. We have never been before so wanted some advice or recommendations for a hotel near to DL other than the 3 Disney hotels. Ideally somewhere fairly close with either a shuttle or not too far to drive.

If you want something nicer and chain like, such as Marriot or Hilton, they are a long walk away. Near the gates are many motels, about a dozen within a ten minute walk. Many places off small breakfasts. All hotels have shuttles in the Anaheim Resort District, either private or ART, the municipal shuttle service. Though ART may not stop at each hotel, but within 100meters from most.

What sort of specifics do you need in the hotel? With dozens to choose from there is a lot of variety.

If you are seeking a nice "hotel" as opposed to a motel, then the Sheraton Anaheim would be a very nice alternative to the 3 Disney owned properties.
They offer their own free shuttle service every 30 minutes during park hours.

The Hilton run Homewood Suites is also very nice, and is a hotel, not a motel establishment. It also offers its own shuttle, good (large) free breakfast, nice but basic pool/hot tub area with a kids wading pool. We enjoyed it there when we stayed in 2009 after the remodel inside. It def is not within walking distance though.
