My kitchen table is looking pathetic. I am sick of overing it with a tablecloth. The chairs are Napoleon Style Rush seat from Pottery barn. They have lasted 20 years! But the dog ate one of the seats! I have 4 children as well.

So my ? The legs on the table are good. The top is the issue. i was going to paint it, but thought we would be too hard on that. Thn i though of stapling a vinyl of some kind to the top. (found ome st he fabic store) DH nixed that saying it would look tacky, hmmph! So any creative ideas? It is wood.

And on the chairs, they are a dar tealish color, which can go or stay depending on the color of the tabletop. On the seats i was thinking of perhaps a fabric cushion on a board that slips in? Or am i getting in over my head? Any other ideas? The seat is shaped with the legs sticking above in front so a tadition chair pad wouldnt work.

So help! I want to try to salvage it. ny i teresting ideas?

If you paint the top you can then cover it with a couple layers of polyurethane to protect the paint. then you could always paint the chairs to match.

Ok so i just took the seat out of the chair. (once i get an idea.......) wondering if i could just put some foam on top of it, batting and fabric right onto the caning?

Pinterest is your friend.

You can search for all kinds of ideas. Be careful though, you may end up wanting to redo everything. I know I now have a huge list of projects to get through :rotfl:

Just a couple of days ago, I saw an adorable table where they had stapled a piece of oil cloth over the table. They had a kitschy, farmhouse theme and the oil cloth was red with white polka dots. So, stapling something over the top doesn't necessarily have to look tacky.

Yes, you could.

Personally, i've always wanted to make a penny top table- you glue pennies to the table and then seal it. not everyone's taste but i think it looks awesome! There are lots of youtube videos on how to do it.

If it is wood you can sand it down and then polyurethane it. It will look brand new.

It is tedious however it will last.

This is what I was going to suggest. Sand it down with a good random orbital sander (you can google how to do it properly and what grades of sandpaper to use). Then stain it whatever colour you want with a good brand of wood stain (I like Minwax). Once dried you reseal it with polyurethane. I like the kind that you can wipe on with a rag rather than the type that requires very careful brushwork. You would need about 3 coats for a hard wearing surface. Let dry well between each coat. Once done, the top should last you another 20 years.

My Dad and Grandpa refinished a table that my grandparents bought in the 50's, sometime in the late '60. It's maple and they didn't stain it, just put 10 coats or so of poly on it. My Grandpa used it for many years and then it sat in his barn for at least 10 years. I have the table now and the top STILL looks brand new. The legs are starting to look a little worn though.

It is a pottery Barn table, so not sure ho great the wood is. But yes sanding will be step one. If it looks ok then i will just restain it. But im thinking it will need a paint job. I am starting tomorrow! I'll let you know how it goes.
