I have been to wdw a number of times and have decided to try out dl I just have a few questions... what would be the best airport to fly into? john wayne seems to be the closest to dl, but I see a lot of posts about lax. I am traveling with a three month old and 19 month old, from what I have been reading getting there seems to be harder then wdw. Also, I see that you have to walk from your hotel to the park even on disney property, how does that work for people? I plan on staying at paradise pier. my last question would be for advice on where to eat, wdw I know menus by heart but dl I am clueless. Thanks to everyone for anyhelp they can give... :cool1:

I have flown in to LAX in the past, but in a couple of weeks, I am going to try John Wayne.

We are staying right across the street at the Best Western Park Place Inn and have heard it is VERY close to the entrance the parks.

I'll post a trip report when I return in a couple of weeks!

John Wayne is much closer. You fly right over Disneyland going into JW and it is a short drive over. I fly into there all the time for business. I am not sure why getting to Disneyland would be harder than getting to WDW. The drive from Orlando airport is much longer than it is from either airport in So Cal.

You can walk or take the monorail if staying at the Disney resort Hotels but everything is very close and not a long walk at all. Going from the Disneyland Hotel to either park is a shorter walk than going from the Boardwalk to Epcot. Paradise Pier is the longest walk and the farthest out of the Disney Hotels but it is still not too bad a walk. It just won’t be as easy to get right back to your room as if you were in the DLH or the GC. The food selection has improved at Disneyland (or at least at the resorts and with the addition of Downtown Disney. What food are you looking for? There is a fun character breakfast at the PP with Lilo and Stitch.

Thank you for the airport advice. I saw this morning that it is $100 cheaper per person to fly into lax. I guess I am just used to mears at orlando, and the disney buses taking people from park to park. I am looking for meals that are both fun for children and good food for myself and husband. Is the food more expensive at dl then wdw?

Well for that price than the extra 30 minutes might be worth it.

I think your best bet to eat is outside the parks. There will be less of a crowd and better food. The hotels also have great food and each Disney hotel has a character breakfast but they are about 25$-30$ per person and I can’t remember how much for kids since our 5 month old was free. Also Rainforest Café in Downtown Disney was very good for breakfast, lunch and dinner with many other great selections at DTD and they are just outside the park entrance (very short walk). I would suggest maybe just getting a snack and drinks in the parks and walk to the GC or DTD for food and maybe do dinner and breakfast at the Paradise Pier. It seems to be about the same price as food at WDW.

We flew into LAX in May because it was cheaper. The drive was only about 40 minutes from the rental car lot to DL and wasn't bad at all. IMO, it would be worth saving the money for other things to drive just a bit longer.

The walk from Paradise Pier to Disneyland is maybe 10-15 minutes up Downtown Disney. With the age of your kids you will definitely want to have you own stroller. We really enjoy that walk and it is much less hassle than waiting for the busses/boats/monorails at WDW. No long lines and wondering if you will get a seat or have to wait for the next one! Park hopping is so easy! You can start out at Disneyland, grab a fastpass for later and then when DCA opens go over there for awhile then walk back to Disneyland and use your fastpass and so on! We have gotten where we parkhop less each trip at WDW because it eats up so much time (especially if MK is involved), not so with Disneyland. You can catch the monorail in DTD and it will take you right into Tomorrowland which can be very nice. We do this a lot if we have taken a break midday and are returning. First thing in the morning the lines for the monorail can be long and its sometimes easier to walk. Plus you miss Main Street and seeing the castle if you take the monorail in. At night if you decide to take the monorail back you will probably want to leave well before park closing since many people have the same idea. Again, you can wait in line longer than it would take you to just walk back to the hotel. Also, there are numerous live musical acts on DTD each evening and we always enjoy listening and enjoying those while we eat or walk by.

The food at Disneyland is slightly more expensive but I find the quality to be better. Also, Disneyland has many wonderful counter service places with wonderful atmosphere. We love Rancho del Zocalo for the good Mexican food and our kids love to sit and watch the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as it comes into its last segment. In New Orleans Square in Disneyland (which is so beautiful and I miss it so much at WDW) there are a couple of places with great counter service food and atmosphere. At Riverbelle Terrace you can have breakfast (Mickey pancakes) and gaze over the River and Tom Sawyer's Island. During the day and evening you can hear live Dixieland Jazz while you eat. For sit down meals we love Hooks Pointe, Blue Bayou, Goofy's and Ariel's Grotto (now called Cap'n Mickey's I believe) Goofy's Kitchen is in the Disneyland Hotel and a very short walk from Paradise Pier. It is our favorite character meal at either DL or WDW. It is very similar to Chef Mickey's but has more characters. Since there are fewer character meals at Disneyland you generally see more characters at each one. For instance at Goofy's you will see Goofy of course and usually Pluto, Minnie, Chip N Dale, a princess or two and other characters such as Genie, Captain Hook and Aladdin to name a few. Goofy and all the others come out about every 15 mintues and dance with the kids, even my 10 year old son loves that! Ariel's at DCA is so nice at night, you can sit outside and enjoy the characters and the lights of Paradise Pier. Most of the counter service places offer such large portions you can share which really cuts down on your cost. We almost always eat in the parks during the day since it cuts down on the time and walking. On weeknights when the park closes early we enjoy having dinner at DTD on our way back to the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier. You can make reservations for all of the DTD restaurants and if you are planning on going right after park closing you will probably need them since many other people have that same idea!

If you go to www.allearsnet.com and go into the 50th anniversary section you will find quite a few Disneyland menus. There may not be as many choices as WDW but you won't starve or feel deprived of fun dining experiences I promise! I believe there are several other sites that have Disneyland dining info as well, maybe somebody else can give you those. Good luck!

Amy &Dan, thank you for the informative post!

You're welcome, it's either hang out on disboards or clean out my daughter's closet! Judging by all my long winded posts today you can see what my choice is!

I would really make sure you factor in commute traffic. It is not unheard of for the drive to be 90 minutes or more. I've gotten an awful sunburn from sitting in traffic with my sunroof open during commute time between Universal and Anaheim. SNA (John Wayne, Orange County) is just so much easier. I wouldn't want to do LAX with 2 small children!!
If my DH, DD and I are flying down just to do DL we never rent a car. It can be a waste of money if you are staying at one of the DL Resorts. You will need to pay for parking at the Hotel. As far as getting around the 2 parks and DTD walking is really easy. Everything is very close.
Good luck with your plans!

I would have to agree with Amy. The drive from Orange County is much better. The traffic through LA last weekend was 10 miles an hour if you were lucky and most of the time we were stopped. I am surprised LAX is cheaper. I always get better rates flying into John Wayne when I fly for work down to there.

I just want to thank everyone for their help. My husband and I have decided to go back home to disney world. Even using our points for a hotel it is still over a thousand dollars in airfare alone. So again thanks for all the great advice!
