Need Disers support: wisdom teeth coming out next week!

My biggest recommendation is only take the prescription pain pills when you absolutely have to. I had mine out when I was 20 (almost 10 years ago, *gasp*) and my biggest problem was the Vicodin ate a hole in my stomach. So, I needed to eat to make my stomach feel better, but I couldn't eat because my mouth hurt. It was horrible. My doctor told me to rinse with salt water, but it made me gag. My FIL (who is a Dentist) got Peroxyl (OTC antiseptic mouthwash) for me and I used that instead. Much, much more pleasant than salt water and it didn't burn at all.

I am terrified of the dentist. I had 2 of mine out when I was 20 weeks pregnant with my youngest. One of the teeth was impacted and it broke. I had only novocaine, and it wasn't bad at all. The worst part was changing the gauze. The texture of it made me gag. I had very little pain. I did take a couple of tylenol 3 on the first day, but I am not big on meds and was pregnant, so I didn't want to take anything that wasn't necessary. I also took a homeopathic called arnica-it helps with swelling and bruising. I did not have any visible swelling or bruising.

Good luck!

I had mine out 4 years ago but only the bottom 2. I was just given a local anesthetic and honestly is wasn't that bad. I didn't even use any pain meds afterwards. The worst part was right after drooling and not being able to talk from being numb.

I also held off on mine, I was 25 when I finally got up the nerve, and only then so I could get braces.

The worst part for me was the IV, and it didn't really hurt. I'm just really terrified of needles, and the IV was the reason I put mine off for so long. The "surgery" itself took less than 1/2 hour, they woke me up and I was on my way shortly after that. I didn't get bruised at all and not very swollen either. I took the pain meds for the day after surgery then to regular tylenol. One thing that helped, for several days after, I used a food processor to chop up all my food so I wouldn't have to chew it. The worst part of the recovery was the gauze in my mouth, it was just gross.

It will be fine, I promise!

Actually, I completely understand your fears, though. I am hanging out on the board this morning to take my mind off of my procedure this afternoon! I'm scared, too. I am having a gum graft. I had one a year ago and it was terrible. They told me it was no big deal, so when it was I think that made it all the worse, you know what I mean--not expecting the worst. The gory details are the dentist removes tissue from the roof of my mouth and stitches it my my gums. It doesn't require anesthia, though. Last time I went through two weeks of a terrible time. So, I am really scared about today. Here is a recommendation: I am taking Xanax before I go in! This was OK'd and prescribed by the dentist. I don't know if you could take it with anasthesia though. Maybe the night before? You would DEFINITELY need to consult your doctor and anestheologist (sp) before.

Glad I'm not alone, anyway. Best of luck next week.
Good luck and I will send you good vibes! What happened that made you need this procedure?

I had mine pulled when I was 18 or 19.

I was awake but not coherent (sp).

I didn't even need the narcotic pain meds after. So it was a breeze for me but I am one to leave the hospital walking 2 days post c-section with out much pain.

PROCEDURE MOVED UP THREE DAYS!! I AM TERRIFIED!!

Sorry about the yelling but that is what it sounds like inside my head right now!!

Do make sure you're going to an experienced oral surgeon, not a general dentist. It makes all the difference! I had mine done by a highly rated oral surgeon and had no problems whatsoever.

If you think you might be sensitive to pain meds you might ask for something not so strong. In my experience dentists like to prescribe Vicodin, lortab, hydrocodone. Those all tend to loop you. I've found Tylenol 3 to be an effective pain killer that isn't too strong. Good lukc, you'll be fine

hey!

I had all four of mine out (2 were impacted) about 2 years ago. i had what they called "twilight," which i believe is sort of general anesthesia but sort of a mild dose so you are groggy and out of it but minimally....LOL someone can correct me as to what it technically is! :rotfl2:

anyways, afterwards i was ok...i slept for a few hours, and was good until i got up to use the bathroom...the meds they had given me during the operation made me almost faint 3 times...and i have never fainted before in my life! scary!

however, i took the pain med. only 1 time, right after surgery in case my mouth started to hurt...luckily, that was the only time i took it! i did not have much pain at all!

good luck! i hope it isn't as bad as you are thinking! i vote general anesthesia or whatever i had....when i woke up i thought they hadn't even started yet...and they were completely done! it was great! : )

Thank you all sooo much. I go in the morning after I drop off DD at school. I think I am ready.

OP, hope everything went well with your appt :) . I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth surgically (in a hospital operating room) removed about 15 years ago. I had a great surgeon and I have to say it was THE easiest dental procedure I have ever had done (and that's saying alot since I've had braces twice and most of my teeth have been filled and refilled). I was only given 500 mg tablets of Motrin to take afterwards (how I was supposed to swallow those horse pills with cotton in my mouth I'll never know) and I only ended up taking them once when I got home. No other pain relievers, no ice, nothing. I didn't even bruise which the dr was expecting because I've very fair skinned. I was so hungry when I got home I ate potato chips! The next day I was eating normally with no pain. I have a major fear of dentists, and I keep asking mine if he can just put me completely out whenever he has to do a filling ;)

DH had his wisdom teeth taken out at his dentist's office when he was in college. I think they gave him Tylenol with codeine? He only took it once after he came home and was eating Kentucky Fried Chicken that same night. I hope you have a similarly easy experience to ours!

I survived! It was unbelievably easy. They put me out so fast, the next thing I knew I was waking up. It hasn't even really hurt that much. They gave me only Tylenol #3 because I am a small person. I only take it every now and then. My face has swollen the past day but all is well. I would have never dreamed it would be this easy. I am so proud of myself that I got it done.

Thank you all for your support, good vibes and pixie dust! I hope I can return the favor!

By the way, I even stopped at the Disney Store on the way home. I HAD to get the Little Mermaid DVD (and a couple of other things)!

Glad to hear that everything went smoothly for you! That's one less thing to have in the back of your mind to bug you (which means more room for Disney thoughts :teeth: ).
