My Son 22 months has a diaper rash from a stomach bug. He now has his first diaper rash. He has problems with zinc in the diaper cream it burns so now I don't know what to do. I have put him in cotton underwear and we have tried Vaseline with no luck. Any suggestions?

I swear by Original Desitin, but it has a very high zinc content. (usually the higher the zinc the better the healing) I have also had luck with A&D ointment.. but I can't say if it's high in zinc or not.

Get some hydrocortisone cream and put it on BEFORE the vasoline or A&D. It will help with the inflammation.

I am not sure about the zinc content - but I always had good luch with A&D ointment....or odd as it sounds AloeVera gel for sunburn.

My son always had a diaper rash(we finally just started potty training) and he would say the desitin was burning him so I started using Baby powder with cornstarch and it did seem to help.

A luke warm bath with aveeno oatmeal will help give relief. you might want to call your ped though. If the desitin/zinc is hurting he might have a yeast based rash and will require a prescription or at the very least over the counter lotrimin. The aveeno will soothe and help dry up a diaper rash and the vaseline based creams will help lay a protective layer down so that when he does potty its not so acidic on his skin. I have also used butt paste and that stuff can knock out a rash over night if its not yeast based. If he has had a tummy bug are you giving him plenty of water? That will help flush the yuck out of his system and rehydrate as well which can help with the rash. I know im long winded but diaper rash isnt a clear cut diagnose and fix! Many factors can cause irritation.

Aveeno baths- Brodreauxs(sp) butt paste or vaseline/AD ointment or lotrimin if its yeast based and plenty of water! I hope this might help and Im so sorry for your little guy. :sad1:

A&D works well.. I would suggest go to your pharmacist and ask them what they would suggest. I know Milk of Mag works great also...but, I go to my pharmacist first, saves me a dr. appt and money...good luck...I do know there are other creams out there for this sort of problem and for the life of me, I can't remember the name of them...

A&D worked OK for us, plain old vaseline worked pretty well, for awhile I swore by Flanders Buttocks Ointment (but it has a lot of zinc), and by the time she finished with diapers, we were using Burts Bees Diaper ointment (which has no zinc, but is quite expensive).

If I were to have another, I would use Flanders and Burts bees. They were head and shoulders above the rest.

If you can't use Desitin, Balmex, Butt Paste, of the other usual diaper rash creams, try Aquaphor. I think it works better than Vaseline.

My little guy (27 mos) just had really a really bad diaper rash. I alternated using Desitin & corn starch and using Butt Paste and corn starch. I gave him Aveeno oatmeal baths every night. Also, I changed him pretty much every hour during the day so that he was not sitting in a wet diaper. In a couple of days, the rash was gone.

Good luck. :goodvibes

Thanks everyone I am Really good about changing him hated the thought of ever getting a rash, but this stomach bug really did him in the poor thing. My DH is getting him A&D and lotrimin. He is getting plenty of water and fluids and is acting like himself, but as you all know changing a 22 month old isn't easy to begin with but with this rash I can't even keep him on the changing pad. :sad2: We will be starting Potty training very soon;)

I know this is going to sound bizarre, but this stuff REALLY works. Corona ointment for animals. This is what the pharmacist at CVS suggested to me a couple years ago when DS had a bad diaper rash. She had used it with great success for her twins. They sold it at CVS. I think she had to get it for me from behind the counter. It says lanolin-rich antiseptic ointment for horses, cattle, small animals and pets. Think chapped utters...ouch. All I can say is it works! I would put it on him before bed and in the morning it would be so much better. Pretty much cleared up.

if at all possible, i would try to give him some time without a diaper to let the air help heal. that, combined with a nice warm bath should be helpful.

good luck! i have an 18 mo old little girl - i know how heartbreaking the bad diaper rashes can be. :(

I hope he's doing okay!

This happened to us in September when my son was the same age. Nothing worked. My pediatrician wrote a script for something called butt cream. Cost me $60 and I have awesome insurance. I literally keep it on hand now. Sounds crazy but the pharmacy mixed it and it worked overnight. He had Shigella from our subdivision pool and it was HORRIBLE.

Wish you guys the best and hope he's better soon!

My daughter is queen of diaper rashes. Whenever it gets bad, we mix aquaphor & desitin together. Aquaphor is some amazing stuff.

Also, are there bumps or is just clearly a rash? I'm just a bit concerned about him having a yeast infection. If it's a yeast infection, try some Lotrimin after every change for a couple of days. Works like a charm.

No bumps but a raised red rash almost looks like someone spanked his little bottom. I feel so bad I had some nystatin at home so the pedi told me to use that just in case. Thanks for all of the responses this is why I LOVE the DIS everyone is so great and helpful

I vote for A&D ointment and lots of air time-what's a little pee on the floor?

There is a barrier cream called TRIPLE PASTE that is simply amazing.

www.triplepaste.com

Our first pediatrician recommended it - it can cure ANYTHING. I swear. We have used it thru two babies and now will for our third.

Recently, I have seen it at Target in the baby aisle. Previous kids we had to ask the pharmacist for it at Walgreens or Walmart; Often we would order online.

It is pricey - but worth every single penny. We use it for diapers, chaffing, even when the kids have colds we put it on their noses!!! It is a miracle.

also...wipes...they say to not use wipes if the rash is really bad - just wet washclothes...

WE SPRINKLE BAKING SODA AND SOAK IN A BATH. THAT NEUTRALIZES THE ACID IN THE URINE AND HELPS TO HEAL. ALSO, REMEMBER GIVE ALOT OF WATER TO HELP W/ ACID IN THE URINE AND STAY AWAY FROM APPLE JUICE WHICH HAS LOTS OF ACID. THEN WE SWITCH BETWEEN A&D OINTMENT AND TRIPLE PASTE. tRIPLE PASTE IS A BIT EXPENSIVE BUT, WORKS WONDERS. GOOD LUCK, I HOPE YOUR LITTLE ONES BUM GETS BETTER REAL SOON.

My oldest DS had diaper rash extremely bad when he was 13 months old. Whenever we put traditonal diaper rash cream on it, it would burn him something awful. My ped said to put Milk of Magnesa (sp) and it worked beautifully. I thought that was a bit wierd, but it worked.

A warm bath, air time, and a hair dryer set on low speed/low heat. Then petroleum jelly - lather it on! It works everytime for my DD's bottom! If it is a yeast rash though, he will need something different. Is he on antibiotics? Sometimes the antibiotics cause the rash as well.
