Need camera sugs for teen

Hi there I am hoping some of you more expereinced folks can help me out. I would like to purchase a camera for my 15 DS for a great year with grades. He will taking a photography class next Septmenber but would like to get him started out with a camera he can carry around and get the hang a bit. I am hoping you can suggest a pocket camera. He purchased a Vivitar from Walmart a kit and it is a mess. So am hoping someone can direct me. I was hoping to spend 100 or a wee bit more as I will be getting him a considerably better one for class but the summer I was hoping for one he can carry in his back pocket.

If you are looking for one that will take a little bit of a beating, look into waterproof ones. They tend to be more solidly built.
My DD has a Nikon S3000, it was a $100 ish camera that is small enough to carry in your pocket and takes decent pictures.
