Need book suggestions for Ds10

While he is 10 he reads at a much higher level. My problem is trying to find him books that are challenging but with age appropriate content.


I bought him the Young Merlin book today for Christmas. He is into the whole fantasy/Sci Fi thing. Weve done Harry Potter and that was fine but not as challenging as I thought it would be.
He is reading Narnia right now which is one of my all time favourites and he likes it as well.

I was also looking at the Charlie Bone series and Artemis Fowl.

I would love to hear any input or ideas about other books as well

My DD is also 10 and I have the same problem. She read Artemis Fowl. The Egypt Game is also good. The Chronicles of Narnia is another idea although it's a little easier.

I'm curious to see what suggestions are out there.

My DS ADORES the Paendragon Series. They're by an author with last name MacHale. I think there are 5 of them out now.

He also likes Artemis Fowl. One of the best books I bought there was something like the Artemis Fowl Code? It's a black book w/ green letters, and it provides the translation for all the other languages used in the book. My DS will spend hours decoding stuff in the other Artemis Fowl books.

I would suggest Nancy Farmer's The Eye, The Ear and The Arm. Excellent book for both sexes with a sci/fi fantasy twist.

I've found that interest level can be as important as reading level. My 11-year-old is reading the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series (I've not read them -- I HOPE they're PG) which his college-age brother loved. While he likes it, I don't think he likes it nearly as much as the Lemony Snicket books, which he adored. They are probably his favorites outside Harry Potter.

Has he gotten into any of the Gary Paulsen books? Hatchet is the first one, and there are several sequels, as well as other stand-alone books with high boy appeal. One of my favorites was Harris and Me - the subject is a little intense (boy from foster home comes to live with country family) but it was so great. There's a scene where the boys wonder what will happen if they pee on an electric fence...I nearly died laughing!!

The series by Susan Cooper is great, too. Over Sea, Under Stone is the first, but the best is the second one - The Dark is Rising (also the name of the five book series.) English children and the Arthurian legends are the plot of those - I adored them.

Another vote for Gary Paulsen books! (sshhhh, he's my boss)

He writes adventure books, sci-fi books, western books, comedy........you name it!

My 10yo DS has been reading the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan. It's about vampires. They seem a bit scary and gory though.

I asked my son and he also likes Gary Paulsen books. He also suggests War of the Worlds and Vampire Plagues. He planning to read Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paloni next.

What about the Lord of the Rings series? Eragon and Eldest were also good, since he likes the fantasy/sci fi theme.

It's really hard when your child can read like an adult but you do not want him to read adult content books.

What about the Lord of the Rings. I know Tolkien is wordy but it does fall in the Harry Potter, Naria types.

I don't know about the content but what about Johnny Termain (I think that is the title).

There is a series of books that DH read in his early teens that I recently read and really enjoyed - Dragonlance Chronicles. Great for the Fantasy genre, and sophisticated but not adult (there is a wedding between two characters, it does speak of love but only in the emotional context - not physical). I enjoyed them very much, they were very well written and there are a ton of them. You could probably find a bunch at Half Price Books.

Endor's Game is very good, and there are a few of those too. They are Sci-Fi and about young kids but enjoyable reading even for an adult. There are a ton of Star Wars books too, the Thrawn series was very good and similar in style to the other Star Wars Trilogies as far as the type of content. Some fighting of good vs. evil, relationships are discussed but nothing steamy in the stories.

Inkheart or Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke, Eragon, Eldest, Redwall series.... These are all favorites of my DD13, but I think they're gender neutral, and my DD is an advanced reader who still likes these.

This is an oldie, but the Book of Three series by Lloyd Alexander is a good one. It's all fantasy with swords, magic, and adventure. The Black Cauldron is the second book in the series, and also a Disney movie (but does not follow the book very well!). I am currently re-reading this series, as it is one of my all-time favorites!

Try John Christopher's "White Mountain" series. You may also find it as "The Tripods". Great sci-fi.

Has he read the Tolkien books? I started with those around 10 or 11, and went through the whole series.

My ds loved all the Artemis Fowl books. He also likes a series by Philip Pullman, called His Dark Materials. There are 3 books and you can get the trilogy in a set on Amazon.

Anything by Gary Paulson, and I was also going to suggest the Tripod series! (just bought the series for DS, infact).

His two favorite books this year have been Eragon and he's currently still reading Eldest by Christopher Paolini. He's into the dragon thing big time. I bought him the tripod series because he needed a book for his sci fi class and I couldn't get him to read anything but dragons, dragons, and more dragons! (yes, I should have such problems... a reader! LOL)
