Need book suggestions for 3rd grade boy

I don't think anyone has mentioned Kingdom Keepers, by Ridley ?

There are 3 books. The first takes place in the Magic Kingdom at night when all the animitronics come to life. All the evil animitronics try to take over Disney world, or the world or someting like that.

There are 5 kids that have to stop them.....

There are also a bunch of little Disney secrets and small hidden things to look for mentioned in the book. Most of them ,I believe, are true.

I started to read but then got into graduate school. If you guys love Disney, you will love the book.

One series NOT mentioned is the A to Z series by Ron Roy. For example, titles like Absent Author, Burglar Bandit, Canary Caper, etc. Three friends solve mysteries in their town, and the books are funny, good for 3rd grade level reading and very satisfying. The kids can't wait to see the mystery unravel and the three friends have great personalities, and quirky characteristics that your son will come to enjoy. My students love the series!

My 3rd grade DS likes nonfiction right now, especially trivia-type books about animals - the stranger the better!

Right now my son is reading 100 most dangerous things on the planet : [what to do if it happens to you] by Anna Claybourne.
It gives probabilities of being attacked by different animals (cobras, tigers, black widow spiders) and statistics about natural disasters. It's something about little boys reading that kind of thing isn't it?!?
He's also reading about pirates, vikings, and maritime disasters.
He balances it out pretty well. DS and DD watched Winnie the Pooh and Christmas, too today. :rotfl:

This is a list of reading material my Third Graders love. The reading levels are varied so he can find some easy reading to the more challenging depending on his mood or ablility.

Wayside School series
Magic Tree House
Boxcar Children
Diary of a Whimpy Kid
James and the Giant Peach
Charlotte's Web
Stellaluna
Bunnicula
Cam Jansen Mysteries
Shilo
Where the Red Fern Grows

I forgot to mention the Carole Marsh mysteries. They're about real life places such as Hershey PA and Disney World. They're great especially if you're traveling to that place or have been there.

Just wanted to add Calvin and Hobbes and Guiness Book of World Records for some fun reading.

yet another vote for Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. My 9yo and 6 yo sons LOVE THEM and they have read and re-read them several times. They are getting the latest one based on the movie in their Easter baskets.

My 9yo also has loved the Weird School series. You said your son is into humorous and wacky stories and my 9yo is too. I struggled to find a series once he was finished with all of the Wimpy Kid books and he really took to the Weird School series. I think he is going to tackle the ones by Henry Winkler next.

I have read these as well and LOVE them (and my 3rd grade DD has started reading them as well). The 3rd Kingdom Keepers comes out this month, and i can't wait! If you go to Ridley Pearson's website, you can get updates on his books and book signings.

On the adult level, Ridley Pearson also has books for adults - they are thrillers/chillers, but very good....I have read all my library has and have resorted to buying some.

He also has a series about a 13 year old boy called Steel Trapp....I think there are 2 in that series, and my DD and DS have started them as well.

DS8 is in 3rd grade and will only read if he truely loves the book when he starts it, his favs are:
-Diary of a Wimpy Kid series,
-A Series of Unfortunate Events (belonged to DD13 when she was his age)
-The 39 Clues by Gordon Korman
-Goosebumps by H.L. Stine

I don't think I've seen the "Warriors" series by Erin Hunter mentioned yet? I have a 4th grader who can't get enough of them!
From what I understand, some people have a religious objection to them, so you might want to research a bit if you think this might be an issue for you and your family. :)

My son loved the Tom Swift series when he was in 3rd grade. I think it is written by the grandson of the author of the original Tom Swift series that his grandpa used to read.

I also second the Carole Marsh series-he blew through those, loved every one.

Harry Potter books are labeled as 7th grade AR level at our school.

My boys started reading Book of World Records and Ripley's Believe it or Not at 3rd grade. Someone mentioned Hatchett. My DS12 read that in 4th grade and the theme is a little intense for some kids. It's about a boy who is in a small plane crash out in the wilderness alone. My DS was ok with it.

A few random suggestions: National Geographic Kids magazines and the Almanac. My 3rd grader reads and re-reads these all the time.

I appreciate the suggestions, esp for the series books. My DS is such a voracious reader as long as we can find books that really interest him. And I love being able to request a few books at a time from the library so we always have as many as we need, esp if we're on a road trip!

I agree, the 39 Clues series is great!

I'd also recommend books by Andrew Clements -- such as Frindle or Lunch Money.
