Need book suggestions for 3rd grade boy

My 6 yr old boy is reading the How to Train Your Dragon Series (7 books). He's on #2 and loves it. He reads at a 3rd-4th grade level though, and I think these books are meant for 9-12 yr olds.

my 2 grade girl, LOVES encyclopeida brown. Its from when I was younger, but she LOVES them! They are fun.

We also just picked up a book, she has laughed and laughed while reading called
sir fartsalot hunts the booger, I don't know who wrote it,but she has been laughing out loud while reading it.

I didn't read through all of the replies so these may be repeats. My son just turned 10, these are some of his favorites from the past couple of years.

I'm sure someone posted Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It's fun to hear them laugh out loud while they are reading.

The Franny K. Stein series by Jim Brenton

My son read some of The Chronicles of Narnia books in 3rd grade. The Lion, Witch and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian are good for their age.

The Ghosthunter's Series by Cornelia Funke

The Spiderwick Chronicle series

You might try some of the Henry Huggins books by Beverly Cleary (my son liked the Ramona ones but really liked the Henry Huggins ones)

My son loves Roald Dahl books (The Witches, James and The Giant Peach, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc).

The 'Stink' books are really funny. They are by Megan McDonald (the audio books are really fun too).

The Hank Zipzer series is pretty fun. We've read some of them outloud.

There is the Charlie Bone series also. Similar to Harry Potter. I assume one of the pp's who mentioned Bone was referring to the comic book series. Both my boys enjoyed these (Bone) and the youngest enjoyed the Charlie Bone books.

Great thread. My 3rd grader is out of books too. He read the Wimpy kids and Percy Jackson series and loved them. He read the first 2 Harry Potters but I want him to wait on the third - he's very mad at me about that. He is probably ready for it though.

He just read Inkheart and is on Inkspell.

He loved the classics - 20,000 Leagues was one of his favorites. I think he read a shortened addition. He had no interest in the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe books. I have alll of them.

He was looking for the Hobbit yesterday. I own a copy but can't find it around the house. That might be his next series.

I will check out some of the other suggestions people have madde.

Another vote for Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

My ds also just finished reading a book called Mascot to the Rescue! which he really enjoyed.

Typically he reads sci-fi and fantasy. Some of his favorites have been the Magic Treehouse series, Percy Jackson series, and the Secrets of Droon. The next series he's starting on is Deltoria Quest.

I can't get my son to put down the Animorphs series. We have found almost the whole series at Half Price Books and garage sales. He rereads them often.

My 3rd grader DS loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, Andrew Clement's Frindle book, Cody Unplugged was a favorite, and he's dying to start reading the Percy Jackson books.

I have a 4th grade DS and a 1st grade DS, the main books in our house

Captain Underpants (my 4th grader is out of this now)
Ricky Ricotta (similiar as Captain Underpants but less potty humor)
Calvin and Hobbes comics (we own some and check them out of the library)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (we have all the books and the boys fight over them)

My 4th grader is re-reading the Percy Jackson series. He also reads things like Where the Red Fern Grows, The Red Badge of Courage, Charlotte's Web, and we are still trying to talk him into Artemis Fowl, Narnia, and Harry Potter (the size of the books scares him off *sigh*).

He was really into Magic Treehouse in 2nd and 3rd grade.

The important thing is to make sure whatever he is reading is within his reading and comprehension level. My oldest's reading level is pretty close to 8th grade, but the comprehension at that level can be challenging for him, so he prefers things that are in the 3rd to 6th grade level. Both my boys LOVE comic type books because the stories are short, the vocab isn't beneath their reading level, and it has pictures to help/break up things

Cressida Cowell's books are very popular right now. Especially with How to Train Your Dragon out in the movie theaters. DS started with How to Be a Pirate, poured over How to Train Your Dragon, and is now reading How to Speak Dragonese over Spring Break.

DS loved the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.
He has read all of the Magic Tree House books - including the non-fiction Research Guides that go along with some of the later titles.

I have a 9 year old son who loves to read. Many of his favorites have already been mentioned, but here goes....The Cam Jansen books, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, the Captain Underpants series, anything Star Wars or Spiderman, the Bone comics, and I bought him the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book for his easter basket. We started reading the Harry Potter books together, but we put them aside for school work and plan to get back into them this summer. Oh, and he loves the Goosebumps books because he loves anything scary!

My DS8 is a 3rd grader and just recently (finally) got bit by that reading bug!

He has discovered Star Wars graphic novels (like a big comic book). He will devour them! Also anything related to wars/military and fishing,.

Find a subject he likes and look for books based on that...nonfiction works just as well..whatever gets them reading!




A word of caution, I don't tend to "monitor" what my kids read, so be advised some of the Star Wars/graphic novels maybe a little advanced, but I know that Barnes and Noble does sell them more kid appropriate.

Lots of great titles have been mentioned here. I wanted to throw out a website that is wonderful for givng book suggestions on grade level. My 3rd grade DS likes nonfiction right now, especially trivia-type books about animals - the stranger the better! He also likes the Wimpy Kid series. And you might try "Sideways Stories from Wayside School" - It was actually one I read out loud a while ago, but DS loved it, and difficulty-wise it would be fine now.

I expect you've gotten these titles, but I want to say them too. FWIW, I'm a teacher and a Mom of a 2nd grader. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Skinny Bones, Magic Tree House, Captain Underpants, The Bailey School Kids- all of those are great series books to try! Love that he is reading as that really gets them interested in all sorts of things and helps the vocabulary!

39 Clues (next book out April 6 - they obviously didn't think about Easter when they set that date...) BTW there are only 10 books in the series and I believe there will be a movie coming out
