Need book recommendations for a 7th grade girl

This year my family is doing a book exchange for the kids for Christmas. We have my cousin's almost 13 year old 7th grade daughter. My cousin said she likes nonfiction and just finished reading a book about a surfer who lost her arm, and she really liked it. So I was searching nonfiction and many topics were just too mature for her- drug related, children having been abused...not what I was looking for. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I'm going to give 2 on the same subject. The second is heavily pictorial. Its a subject I've seen a couple of girls in that age bracket really get into.

I would like to second "Almost Astronauts" by Tanya Lee Stone it is a phenomenal read!!

I would also suggest "The Glass Castle: A Memoir" by Jeannette Wells.

This is the story of the girl that sailed solo around the world. If she read the Bethany Hamilton book she'd probably like this one!

If she likes Disney, the Kingdom Keepers books are really good too

If she likes animals I'd recommend Marley & Me, Dewey - the library cat, and A Lion Called Christian

I liked reading the books by Torey Hayden when I was in junior high. She was a special needs teacher that also has a degree in child psychology and she writes about her experiences. She deals with kids that have been abused but they are not graphic and are appropriate for that age.

James Harriott's books might interest her as well (All Creatures Great and Small, etc.).

I second James herriot's book. They are beautifully written, funny and interesting.

Three Cups of Tea ( the young readers edition) about an American Dr taken in by a small mountain Pakistani village when he is hurt on a mountain climb. They nurse him back to health and he repays their kindness by building a school for them.

A Break with Charity: A Story about the Salem Witch Trials- Historical fiction



For fiction, The Hunger Games is a great read. My 11 year old couldn't put it down.
