I agree with Winnie. A sudden crying jag is not normal. My guess is that it probably is a tooth, but it wouldn't hurt to take a trip to the doctor just to be sure.
Take him to the doctor, that is what they get paid for! Yes, babies cry but when you've had your baby long enough to know their normal routine and their normal behavior...you know the difference. If the doctor cops an attitude...oh well...boohoo he gets some $$ for 2 mintues of work. Make sure he does a complete exam though before you leave.
Don't ever be afraid to go to the doctor because he might roll his eyes, you may be a first time mom but you still know when something is up with your baby. If it is just teething then at least you will have some peace of mind.
My daughter was a very happy baby too. Once, though, when she was about 6 months she woke up and had just a different personality. Not like her at all. No fever, no outward signs of being sick. But we knew she wasn't right. She was sad and kind of cranky. We took her in to the emergency room (these things always happen on a weekend!) and told them we had no proof, but we knew something had to be wrong. On a whim the doctor ran a test and she had an intestinal type infection. Within 6 hours after starting antibiotics our baby was back to normal! Always trust your instinct. You will find you are usually right. Don't let anyone tell you any different!
I took my dds in for even the slightest thing. Yes even if I didn't need to, but you never know. My ped office was always comforting and reasurring. The Dr. told us that they trust us as moms to "know" if something is wrong.
Take him to the doc if you "feel" you need to, as it is better to know than to wonder.
This baby sounds "gassy" to me. Have you tried Milicon drops? Ask your pediatrician about this. It's completely safe, and is not absorbed by the body. It simply breaks up large gas bubbles so that they become smaller and can be easily passed. You can buy them at any drugstore. Wally World even has a generic.
It can make a world of difference.
Write everything down and take him to the doc
right away. They (pediatric experts) now claim that
there is no such thing as colic-it's immature esophageal
valve trouble with reflux that causes the pain. Our
nephew screamed for several months before diagnosis-
our ds had it(we knew from his major spit ups).
Also, ear infections have caused mystery crying with
absolutely no fever. Once ds had double ear inf. and
never pulled the first ear or had any rise in temp.
Take him to the doc. Seems like babies should have
bms every day but I'm a novice about that stuff-our
bowl problems started later-age 5. Don't feel inept-
docs are necessary for little teeny babies since they
can't talk to us.
Good luck.

If a couple doses of tylenol didn't help, I would definitely call the doctor. Let them know what's going on since Friday. In DS's ped's office, you can talk to a nurse if you don't want to bring him in right away. She may be able to help you figure it out. If not, she'll probably ask if you want to take him in.
If not, please make an appointment with your ped. It could be a number of things. My youngest gets ear infections and never has any of the symptons except for screaming. It could be teething but oragel or motrin would have helped.
It could very well be an ear infection. Always remember 'when in doubt, take him to the Dr.', if your Dr. seems irritated by that, it's time to find a new Dr.
I just want to restate, "ask your pediatrician". My opinion is just that- my opinion. I always called my pediatrician, if I was worried about my child. No matter what time of the day or night. Your child's health and well-being should be his/her utmost concern.
My best to you and your baby!
I can't add anymore advice. You've gotten some great words of wisdom here! All I can add is my girls got at least one or two ear infections a year, and they never had a fever with them, and that's the only time they cried so much I didn't know what to do with them. That's always been my rule of thumb, if I feel like I "just give up" it's time to call the dr. 9 out of 10 times it was the right call....and the 10th time....I'm not too proud to be a worried mama!
He seemed to be feeling a little better last night. Although he was fussy at time it was better than the screaming and he slept through the night last night so that is also a good sign.
At daycare yesterday afternoon he started passing A LOT of gas so we think it just may have been his poor little tummy. This kid lived on Mylicon drops for the first 3 months of his life but we have not had to use any in over 6 weeks and I thought he had gotten over the gas problems so I didn't even really consider it before. I started him on the Mylicon again last night and it did seem to help. I guess the real test will be later on today.
On a positive note my little guy finally has learned how to eat rice cereal instead of just spitting it out at me. It has been a definite learning experience for him but he now knows how to swallow it! He finished a whole bowl of cereal last night and we are going to start him on a morning cereal feeding today in addition to his evening cereal. Plus he has learned how to hold his own bottle and last night during the cereal he wanted the spoon for himself too. He is growing up too fast.
Becka, sometimes the cereal can make him gassy too. I would give him the Mylicon once a day. My dd was super gassy and the cereal made her gassy and can cause constipation until their system gets used to it.
You're a goom Mom, don't ever question that. All these things are new to you so don't ever be afraid to follow your instincts. You can always pm me too
Sounds like you may be on the right track. I'd give him the drops for a while if it seems to help. If it doesn't, I'd make another trip to the doctor. My kids used to have ear infections without a temp or tugging at an ear. Trust your instinct. You'll know if he needs to go.
