Last year I had my cookie swap on a Sunday afternoon and just had a mixture of the usual stuff, but this year I am doing Saturday at 5:00 so I feel like I need more substancial appetizers and I'm thinking something warm, does anyone have any ideas?

And while we're thinking about it - what's your favorite holiday drink - Martini?

Vodka Tomato bruchetta
6 Roma Tomatoes, finely diced
2 Garlic Cloves, crushed & minced
2 Green Onions, finely chopped
1/2 cup Basil Leaves, finely shredded
2 teaspoons of Vodka
4 teaspoons Olive Oil Salt & freshly Ground Pepper
Combine all the ingredients together and let sit for one half hour before serving on sliced and toasted baguette.

GRINCH cocktail
Ingredients:

2 oz. Midori
1/2 oz. lemon juice (fresh)
1 tsp. sugar syrup
Mixing instructions:

Mix all ingredients with ice in a shaker. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Option: Garnish this green drink with a red cherry

How about a warm crab or artichoke dip with some pita chips and other hearty wheat crackers. Mmmmm... :) We've also done chili put out in the crock pot on low with some strong nacho chips (to hold the weight) and a bowl of cheese to sprinkle on top if your guests desire.

I don't drink much, so when I hear holiday drink, I always think of the nog! :cool1:

Thank you, love the way both sound!

These are cold apps but really cute. My mom makes olive penguins.

It's basically 2 black olives (one med, one jumbo - pits removed), and she slices the jumbo, fills it with cream cheese and then places the medium one on top. She then uses a carrot slice, cuts a V out for the beak, uses the rest for the feet and assembles it with a toothpick (usually the decorative ones but she didn't this time). She also uses roast red pepper strips to make scarves, but didn't have them in the house when she made this batch.

She calls them skating penguins since she puts them on a plate wrapped with foil so it looks like ice.

Those are so adorable!!!

You all have some really yummy ideas here. I just posted Baked Potato Dip on my blog today. There's no potatoes in it, but it's the kind of things you would put on a loaded baked potato. The recipe calls to bake it in the oven, but I think it would also be good in a crockpot if you have a small one.

My favorite apps. are:

artichoke dip (can add crab to it, or spinach) with sliced baguette or pita chips
homemade guacamole (with red chips to be festive!)
flatbread pizzas -- fontina and roasted butternut squash with a little sage is great, white clam, or the PPs recipe sounds wonderful
spanikopita from Trader Joe's
chicken taquitos from Stop & Shop (honestly! my friends loved these at a summer party)
brie cups -- use store bought phillo cups (in the freezer section), add a square of brie or good melting cheese, and add a small amount of raspberry jam
a nice cheese plate with some apricots, strawberries, fig jam, bread, crackers, olives, nuts sliced meats (prosicutto, salami, pepperoni, etc. or pates)
Bacon wrapped scallops
shrimp cocktail
stuffed dates (w/cheese or an almond) wrapped in bacon and broiled
scallop puffs - recipe in the Open House Cookbook by Sarah Leah Chase
anything by Ina Garten!!

Have a great party!!

cheese ball.
pasta salad
cheese and crackers

deviled eggs

if all eles fails.. lol crockpot some mac n cheese :scared1:

Everywhere I go peple ask me to bring buffalo chicken dip and my clam dip. The clam dip is delicious and a little different. It tasted like a baked stuffed clam.

1 sleeve of Ritz crackers crushed

1/2 stick of butter melted

1/4 cup of parmesan cheese

garlic powder

oregano

parsley

1/2 onion chopped

1 can minced clams with juice(6 1/2 oz can)

Mix all together and bake at 350 for about 40 minutes until browned and bubbly. Serve with lemon wedges and Ritz crackers.

Everyone loves this one!

mix softened cream cheese with sour cream and taco seasoning packet. Put on the bottom of a platter. then put strained salsa. Then keep putting toppings on top such as tomatoes, onions, lettuce and shredded cheddar cheese and put sliced black olives and jalapeno peppers if interested. Serve with scoops. Everyone goes crazy over this. They don't even say hi to me - just grab my dip. If I don't bring it that's all they talk about. Yes, it really is that good.

I just found out a couple of hours ago that I am doing Christmas. I wasn't suppose to this year so I'm interested in hearing any recipes.

I second the buffalo chicken dip... My directions are for making it in the oven but I always just throw it all in the crockpot and it works just fine

• 1 1/2 lbs chicken breasts, cooked and shredded
• 1 (12 ounce) bottle hot sauce (use whole bottle or just half, if desired)
• 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
• 1 (16 ounce) bottle bleu cheese salad dressing (or can use ranch or 8 oz blue cheese and ranch)
• 2/3 cup chopped celery
• 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese or monterey jack and cheddar cheese blend

Directions
1. Preaheat oven top 350.
2. In a large bowl, mix shredded chicken, celery and cheese.
3. In a saucepan over med-low heat, combine cream cheese and salad dressing and stir until smooth. Stir in bottle of hot sauce ( don't have to use entire bottle if you want it milder). Pour heated mixture into bowl with chicken mixture. Stir to mix well.
4. Pour into a 13" x 9" baking pan. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes or until bubbly----make sure top doesn't get browned. Let stand for 10 minutes. Serve warm OR cold-----tastes best warm--- with celery or other veggies and crackers.

Something I brought to a party -meatballs (store-bought) in a crockpot with spaghetti sauce and little rolls to make mini meat ball subs. They were a huge hit
