My husband called me this morning and has finally agreeded that buying a DVC would be a good investment for our family.

Now the questions is since he drug his feet so long on deciding (I've been after him for a year and a half now) do I buy now or wait? I already have our vacation booked, planned, ADR's, airline tickets purchased and time off from work requested and approved. So our dates are not flexible at all. Our trip is Sept 9 - 19 if we purchase now would it be a benefit or would we need to wait to use our points since we really can't be flexible on our dates. Would we be better off waiting to purchase when we get back from this trip or do we purchase now and keep our fingers crossed our dates will work?

Appreciate all your input and so am so excited my husband has agreeded. Yeah Us :-)

:) When my DH agreed to DVC we had a trip planned and paid for in Oct 2009, we bought at AKV, the Guide booked us our new rooms for the same days at AKV....make that a part of the sale if you are buying from Disney. It was fabulous. However, you can bank your points, go in Sept and get free dinning or whatever you have planned. If you are going for Free Dinning or something you will not get that with DVC. It may be easier and cheaper to keep your current reservation. The Guides are able to work magic if they are trying to make a sale.

Are you buying direct from Disney? If so they should be able to check availability before you purchase. I've read on these boards that when you buy from Disney they can often get rooms for new DVC buyers at full resorts. Buying resale you would just have to wait and cross your fingers for availability (it can take a couple of months for the entire process). We are new to DVC and I am not familiar with September availability.

We actually decided to purchase resale a couple of months before a previously scheduled trip. It does sort of stink that we spent money on a resort room when we could have put the money towards DVC, but on the other hand we got to bank 2009 points instead of using them. There was not time between our deciding to buy DVC and our trip to switch to a DVC resort on points. We decided to go ahead and take our planned trip and will have our first DVC trip later in the year.

Agree with Toddy... You really have two options... buy DVC from Disney now and make it part of the sales agreement (your Sept trip) or you could go resale and get some really great prices especially on SSR....

Before ruling out buying now, as others have said, contract DVC and tell them that you want to buy know but only if you would be able to get a room to replace your current trip.

Many have said they had success, as new buyers, securing reservations that others have not when calling MS.

The worst that happens is they tell you no and you wait. But, I can't believe there is not something that they can get you for that time frame. We did this last year when we decided to add on to our small 50 point resale purchase. We had already booked our Disney trip when we bought this, just figuring we would wait and use the points the following year.

We then called to add on at BLT and told them I could only do the add on if they could get me something booked on points for those same dates. They were able to get us in to SSR without issue. Once I was done adding on, I was able to re-book things and ended up changing to a few different resorts, only 4 months from the August trip.

Good luck!

If you buy from DVC, tell the guide that the sale is contingent upon securing a reservation. I will bet that they have room for you.

I think you need to ask for more than what is suggested. You need to ask for 2009 points. Your note says you are staying at CSR for your stay this year, but doesn't indicate which resort you want to buy at. Assuming it's AKV, SSR, or BLT you have more options to get more. If you are wanting a sold out resort your only option may be to get them to make a reservation for you. So, I would suggest one of the 3 and request 2009 points, guaranteed reservation for you stay, which you will likely use your 2009 points for, plus the per point discount they are offering, assuming you don't want the cruise option.

This is the best that is out there, but it only applies to those resorts still being sold, and I don't think BLT has 2009 points, so maybe just applies to SSR and AKV.

Hope that makes sense. Good Luck with you decision.

I know I got 2009 BLT points (Aug UY) and am 99% all Use Years did; in some cases you just had to wait until the resort opened to use them. I'm not sure if any are still available though. With VGC, some UYs got 2009, some did not- perhaps that is what you were thinking...

Also, when I bought a VWL add-on March 1st, 2010 I got 2009 points with it and paid no dues on them, but it was $101 per point with no incentive. So sold out resort doesn't necessarily mean no prev. year's points.

Yeah, we bought about 3 weeks ago, got the discount and the 2009 points with an April use year.

Would you be purchasing resale or direct through Disney? The reason I ask is because, if you are purchasing through Disney, sometimes the Guides can make some "magic" happen and score you a room that would otherwise be unavailable if you make it a condition of your purchase. Also, given that you can get 2009 points with most Use Years when buying direct, that is certainly something else to consider in favor of buying now (of course, when going resale you can probably find a lot of loaded contracts too). Either way, good luck and hopefully we'll be welcoming you home soon. :goodvibes

Another option: Keep your trip as you have it currently planned. Get a car for a day or two and go visit the various DVC resorts to help you decide which resort you want for your home resort. Go spend an hour or two at each resort. Stop at the front desk and ask for a map and recommended walking route. Each resort has a different look and feel which you may fall in love with, or, alternatively, not like. Everybody has their own preferences.

Good Luck!

I really appreciate all the helpful feed back. I was so excited to buy I hadn't though about making my purchase contingent on what they could do for my trip this year and I never thought about asking for 2009 points.
