Need Advice!!!

OP, that is the lamest excuse ever. College kids are back the week before because classes usually start the end of August so I don't see how there will be this crazy rush then. The weekend they move back in to the dorms, sure but not a week to 2 weeks later.
I just moved my ds in this past weekend, the grocery store was busy because it was filled with moms loading up carts for their kids LOL. Next week they won't be there, the students will come in for chips and beer.
It sounds like she is looking for a reason to not approve your vacation time.
I was thinking the same thing. I can NEVER do anything right for this women. No one can. Everytime any one of her employees are called to her office it's "what did I/we do wrong know. Nothing positive out of her mouth. I'm afraid to go over her head to her supervisor because I am worried it would get back to her then my work environment would be even more stressful.

If more then a year notice isn't good enough...is the job really worth it?
IKR thought that would be enough notice. I've only missed work two times for me in the past 1 1/2 years and I was hospitalized both times. I misses a few days recently because by dh had emergency gallbladder removal surgery. Then this past Friday his mom my mother in law passed. Whenever they need me to come in early or work later I always volunteer. Nothing is good enough. I would love to find another job that appreciates me for the type of worker I am.

Start looking for a new job now. When you’re interviewed let them know about your upcoming trip. Don’t cancel or change the trip. Good luck!

oh wow. By your first post I assumed you were the store manager or something, not a part time associate. I think for all part time employees it should be more a matter of letting them know when you will be gone (more than 2 weeks notice if needed) than asking for approval. Are they paying you vacation time?

I don't think I would work there. Let your last day there be Sept 7, 2020. And have something else lined up for when you return.
That's a great idea... Lol Have something ready to start when I got back. I am a part time personal shopper. I am a non essential employee. There are several other stores opening up in my area soon and she has already said she wouldn't approve my transfer to another store because she wants me on her team.

I have worked for managers like that before. I was one that always offered to work when needed and I also was crossed trained in different departments. Are you guys with a union? Maybe see if they can help you out...if you worked there a while you should have earned some kind of time off.

She told me since I have been wanting full time for awhile it wouldn't be right me getting that time off. Her "gal pals" just got back from cruises and all I want to do is take a much deserved vacation with my husband.

Anybody on here know of any job openings in Durham NC. I have medical insurance billing and collections and excellent retail experience. 😁

I want to wish you Much Success securing a new job. Perhaps a Competitor, lol

Not only is a Year more than Sufficient notice,... she also holds her Good Employees back from moving up/transfers... corporate would be proud,Not!

I say start your job search now, I wouldn’t change my plans... and when u get that new position, let them know u have an obligation for X date..
Good luck OP!

There's a lot of time between now and Sept 2020. A little confused why you brought the trip up this early. Maybe it's like when my kids were little and asked if we could do something in the future and I just brushed them off with a 'We'll see.'

Maybe she doesn't plan that far ahead.

Boss might not even be there Sept of 2020.

Plan your trip.

And look for another job.

We got free dining in the summer several times, and I didn't mind the heat. We have hot, humid summers where we live so we are used to it. And I didn't think the crowds were bad at all and we went to WDW at least six times in July and August.
We live in NC so we know about humidity too... Lol. How were crowds the first week of June?

I just wanted to be courteous to give department enough time to make arrangements. That way if someone else put in for time off during that time period my request would have been put in first. We have a website where we put in our time off request. In the past I have put in a request 6 wks ahead of time and she said that the schedule had already been made and I asked off too late... 6wks is too late...really????

I'm keeping my reservations the same because you are right. She might become another stores problem by then. Plus I will be updating resume next day off...

I wouldn’t plan a vacation around when free dining might be out. There is no way to tell what is going to happen next year with promos. They might be unicorns, or they might be plentiful.

So true., FD would be nice. I was wanting to go when other kiddos were on school?. Not as crowded? Non Disney people just don't understand... Lol

We've only gone in July and August but actually first week of June may be better since a lot of kids aren't even out of school until June 6 or 7 at least around here.

September is about the time that retail stores start hiring for their holiday staff - I would start applying at all the stores in the mall, BUT tell them up front that you have a vacation planned for SeptemberX-SeptemberX of next year, just so that they are aware. (Yes - I am tell you to start looking THIS YEAR for a new job - no need to take that from your manager - I also though tyou were the store manager at first)

I always let my bosses know a year in advance when my vacation is, and their response is - hve you booked lfights yet (i change my mind ALOT) - and they know when flights are booked that its set in stone, but they are pretty easy going about it

Do some research, free dining isn't always the best value. You may save more with a room discount. You can price out your meals, and see if it makes sense to pay out of pocket.

While I don't know what's available in or around Durham, I know that banks like to hire peak-time part time employees to be tellers. You'll get paid a premium to do that and you may have to work in several branches, depending on demand. It's worth looking into something along those lines... plus you wouldn't have to work nights and maybe only Saturday or Sunday mornings... plus you'd have all of the bank holidays off.

Check on LinkedIn or Glassdoor for part-time positions in your area.

Good luck with your search! Nothing will feel better than telling the b..., I mean your supervisor that you quit.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but is it worth working for a ****ty supervisor for a part time grocery store job? I would find something else if it were me.

Having said that, the last week of September would be nice (if your "lovely" boss allows it).

Seriously though, I'd be thinking about jettisoning that job since it obviously isn't a career type position. Life is too short.

Edit: Genuinely curious, why would Sept 8-15 be such a crazy busy time at grocery stores? Why would this be any different than most other times?
We are the closest grocery store to Duke University as well as NC School of Science and Math. I don't see what the big deal is about September 8-15 is. It isn't around labor day or anything like that. My supervisor slipped up yesterday and mentioned that she had to take her niece back to NY on Sept 4th this year. Why can she take off in September but I can't? Oh yeah that's right she is supervisor and I'm not... Smh

Thank you so much... I will definitely look in to other things. Thanks for the little giggle to with the last sentence.... 😆

Six weeks can be too late. I worked for a small company that only allowed two people to be off any given day. But it most definitely wasn't a supermarket with many, many done of employees.

Does your store have an HR Department? An employee Handbook? A website? Any source that indicates the time-off conditions?

Um, well, actually next year Labor Day is September 7.
