My husband and I had alreasy booked and paid deposit for our September 8 to 15 2020 to WDW. I even went on my employers website amd requested my time off thinking over 1 year would be enough time. My supervisor pulls me to the side yesterday to tell me she can't approve my request because that is one of the busiest times in the grocery retail buisness. Which I understand. I had booked this time because the crowds would be low plus there might be a chance of free dining plus the weather wouldn't be as hot. My supervisor told meI could tale off in June or July and possible the firat part of August. I just don't know what to do now. Should I change my dates to maybe first week in June. I am pretty sure Free Dining won't be offered during June or July. Should I see if I could request ofd the last few days of September and schedule trip from then to first week of October? I know the Food and Wine Festival is now out as well as MNSSHP. If I have to go first part of June is it really that bad considering some kids are still in tjwir last week of school. Has FD ever been offered during the new months I mentioned. Please someone give be advice I was up all night trying to figure someone that. Sorry for so long of a post.

No Free dinning in October or November the passt couple years

I would alk to your supervisor and find out some later dates that would be good - June/July/Aug are BUSY and HOT in Orlando

We got free dining in the summer several times, and I didn't mind the heat. We have hot, humid summers where we live so we are used to it. And I didn't think the crowds were bad at all and we went to WDW at least six times in July and August.

My supervisor is a pain in the tush. If you know what I mean. If I was in her "slick" of friends it would be ok. Yeah she even had something to say about me requesting off for my sons college graduation. I can ask off for anytime in August, September, November or December. I could see if i was full time but im only part time. I might try for the first week in June. Kids will still be in school somewhat. I wonder if FD might be offered in June? Maybe I might tryfor last few days of September to first week of October hoping for FD ending at end of September... Ugh!!!

I'd say you have plenty of time to find another job that values you as a human. An entire YEAR is enough time for your employer to find someone to cover your shift. When i request time off, i'm giving them the courtesy of knowing i won't be there.

oh wow. By your first post I assumed you were the store manager or something, not a part time associate. I think for all part time employees it should be more a matter of letting them know when you will be gone (more than 2 weeks notice if needed) than asking for approval. Are they paying you vacation time?

I don't think I would work there. Let your last day there be Sept 7, 2020. And have something else lined up for when you return.

I would think November and December are busier for grocery stores. I agree with PP about finding a new job. It's over a year notice. That's ridiculous.

My son was PT at a grocery store. He never requested time off. You just part your name in a book to not be scheduled that particular day.

I worked at Kmart in high school and college. Our department manager was such a workaholic we were afraid to ask if for anything. We joked that we had to choose between our prom and graduation.

As an adult I wouldn’t put myself in that position. I agree with others. See if you can find a new job between now and then. I bet if you are a good worker they will have no problem letting you take off for a trip you have already planned and paid for.

I am a retired teacher. I sub a lot in long term positions. This year I was asked to fill a position under a contract due to teacher shortages. I told them up front I have 2 trips planned and paid for. The principal said they will work around them. If they decide to give me a hard time I’ll just tell them I have to resign.

Know your worth. Good help is hard to find.

A year is more than enough notice to get the time off. If you can't go above her with your request, then I have to say I agree with the others who have said seek employment elsewhere. It is just ridiculous that she would have a problem with a over 365 days to find a replacement to cover you.

School in the midwest ends the middle of May - June is CRAZY - I would go with December - do the holiday decor!!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but is it worth working for a ****ty supervisor for a part time grocery store job? I would find something else if it were me.

Having said that, the last week of September would be nice (if your "lovely" boss allows it).

Seriously though, I'd be thinking about jettisoning that job since it obviously isn't a career type position. Life is too short.

Edit: Genuinely curious, why would Sept 8-15 be such a crazy busy time at grocery stores? Why would this be any different than most other times?

That is what I'm wondering. My ds works in a grocery store, the busiest time according to him is the week leading up to Thanksgiving and the one up to Christmas.

OP, if it were me I'd keep my trip booked and go on those dates. You have given them plenty of notice to give a couple part timers some extra hours that week.

She says it is because the college kids are back at school and it is crowded because of that. SMH. She is even giving me problems for me asking off for my sons college graduation.

OP, that is the lamest excuse ever. College kids are back the week before because classes usually start the end of August so I don't see how there will be this crazy rush then. The weekend they move back in to the dorms, sure but not a week to 2 weeks later.
I just moved my ds in this past weekend, the grocery store was busy because it was filled with moms loading up carts for their kids LOL. Next week they won't be there, the students will come in for chips and beer.
It sounds like she is looking for a reason to not approve your vacation time.
