DH and I need a business name. We bought rental property and the city is asking us for a business name because we need a license in that city. (I think they just want to get money out of folks, I haven’t had any other city tell us that and we have a property in another city also.)

So DH came up with the first initials of our children (CEB properties). My issue is child “C” does not live with us, she left us two years ago to live with her biological mother because she didn’t like our no smoking at the age of 13 rule. So I don’t think she has the right to be in the “business name”. Am I wrong with this?
Thank you for your advice and letting me vent.

Although your rule did not seem unreasonable - I can understand your feelings BUT

she is still your child

and if she is your step child - I would be very careful about not treating here equal to the other children - this could upset your DH

if you feel that strongly - tell him you would rather go with a different name and not tell him why (unless you already did) and then just say you think you should choose a name unrelated to the kids so as not to cause any tension -

what about your birthstone? or the birthstone of the month you got married - or something that has to do with your first date - or where he proposed

It's just a letter... if it makes you DH happy why worry... or try re-arranging them and see what he thinks.

Second... what ever you do, on rental property... or any property DO NOT use your own name. Or address. Use a company name and a PO Box. You can't be too careful these days. Having a business name is a good idea... as is having a C-corp or and LLC. Protect yourself. It's important.

I am not really sure one thing has much to do with the other but if it bothers you then maybe go in a totally different direction so as not to open a can of worms.

FWIW, dh and I have rental properties and use our first initials with rentals so its *-* Rentals. We don't have either of the kids involved so they don't get an initial!

Perhaps a hobby you both share or a sport or sports team name that can be modified and neutral? Think of it like a screenname - but remember you may be using it for a long time so it can't be "awful".

Good luck -
TJ

Yeh I think you're totally in the wrong here. If its for the kids you have to include all of them.

I should have written the investments are for our retirements, not the children. If for some reason the children end up with the properties, they will be divided between the three of them equally.

Thank you for all your advice and suggestions, I will be talking with DH tonight. I hope we can come up with something that works.
