Need advice on outdoor movie screen

Are there any kinds of the big outdoor screens that you can show a movie from DVD player on? Not a projector? Or, has anyone rigged one up in any way? Help appreciated!

I'm pretty sure that would just make it an outdoor tv/monitor, rather than a screen. I wouldn't want to even begin to imagine what the price on something like that would be, if it even exists.

around my area, you can rent an inflatable movie screen. It is so much fun. Like going to the drive in movies of old. It works with a DVD player and the quality was great. I think it was about $2000. We did it for a school event.

A friend of my husband's has rigged up something for camping. All I remember right now is PVC pipe. I don't know what the screen part was. I'll ask dh tomorrow (he's sleeping).

You need a projector to get the image on the screen. There's not much you can do to get around that.

I borrowed a projector from a friend and then hung a big white blanket across our swingset. Worked like a charm.

Maybe you know someone in an office where you can borrow from? Most of the projectors that companies use for projection also have a input for a DVD player.

I think you will definitely need a projector.

It wouldn't be huge (60" is the max) - but this is a cheap alternative if it's a one-time deal you don't want to sink money into

Other than that, we can borrow our church's projector for free and have used it to do outside movies. See what connections you have. I'm sure there are rental places as well.

Projectors are indeed the most common technology for super-large screen applications, and, due to environmental factors, practically the only practical approach for outdoor use.

My DH does this almost every summer. He used the projector type thingy to get from computer to screen.

As for the screen we use a cheap white shower curtain liner.

As others have said, a projector is the way to go. We just use the garage door for the screen -- it works great.

My in-laws live in a really small town and they have movies in the park every weekend. They have a projector hooked up to a laptop and stereo for the movie and then someone took a king size white sheet and stapled it to some boards and they hang that in the bandshell. The kids run around and play while the adults watch the movies .

We have one in our backyard. DH bought tarp-like material, put grommets in the corners, and it stretches across the wooden beams that mark a volleyball area. He uses his laptop and a projector of some sort. Very portable, easy set-up, easy take-down. The hardest part is staying awake some nights to bring in his laptop after the kids have watched a movie with friends, especially since it doesn't really get dark until after nine!
