Our 5 year old son has outgrown his regular stroller. He has poor muscle tone, and is not able to walk independently at this time. Any suggestions for a stroller? I'd like something that is comfortable, has a shade, and doesn't look like a wheelchair. Thanks for your help!

2 options;
1. MacLaren Major; looks just like an umbrella stroller, only a little bigger. Folds down really nicely when the footrest is removed.

2. Check out babyjogger.com. They have two swivel wheel special needs jogging strollers, and I really think they don't scream special needs. One in particular, is more mid size and pretty subtle.

I absolutely LOVE our Maclaren Major! Folds easily, relatively lightweight, and very easy to maneuver. It's supposed to hold up to 140 pounds, so you should get a lot of use out of it. Unfortunately, Kayla hates it because it has a 5 point harness so she can't bend all the way over and stare at the spinning wheels (she's autistic).

I'm going to move this to the disABILITIES Community Board where it will be more on topic and hopefully get more answers. If you look around a little on that board, this question has come up before and you will probably find some other threads that will help you.

Adaptivemall.com is a great place to look, even if you don't buy from them. They have Maclaren Major special needs strollers and special needs jogging strollers that were mentioned by the other poster.
They have a lot of information and specifications about the strollers, so you can get a good idea and make comparisons.

One thing I wanted to add was that if you have a medical supply company near you, you might want to "test drive" the stroller first, just to make sure it's a good fit. The special needs strollers are pretty pricey (the Maclaren was $500, not including the sunshade and shopping net)

I bought our Maclaren Major from a seller on ebay with all the accessories for just under $500. Search on "Maclaren Major". The dealer I used was in NJ.

Great service.

In Canada, that stroller still retails with all the gizmos for close to $2000

Another vote for the MacLaren Major! My son is of average build and used it until he was 12 - you can definitely get your money's worth out of it - as posted above, about $500. Good luck :)

I love my Maclaren Major Special needs Stroller! But I have to tell you, I got mine A LOT cheaper! I only paid $329 for the stroller and another $159 for all the accessories! I got mine from babydealz.com. They have free shipping on thier stroller and accessories. Definately the best price around!
