Need advice - HRBlock taxes

I always used HRBlock online for taxes - I pay for Best of Both. This year when the preparer that was assigned my taxes sent me the email for approval - she had lowered my refund for state and federal - a total of $3500. She attached an email saying I didn't have a form entered correctly, however, I've been entering it for 5 years and it is correct. I sent her an email asking if I could make an appt to meet with her in her office - no response. I called her office and left a message - no return call. What recourse can I take? I'm not approving the return as is and losing $3500 - I think the preparer is not familiar with the form I have. Can I contact another HRBlock office to check my return? I can't even look at the return because it appears like it's "locked". Please tell me what I should do.

What's the form? It would have to be something significant to cause a change that large in your taxes.

It has to do with capital loss/gain that came from closing an estate when a relative died - not all preparers are familiar with how to handle it. It is legal and the estate lawyer gave me the paperwork I needed for my taxes - in other words, it's not just something I made up on my own.

Excess deductions on termination isn't something you'd have 5 years running. Cap loss carryforward wouldn't get you that much swing in tax. 691(c) deduction for estate taxes paid with respect to an inherited IRA, maybe?

Well I don't think you have much choice than to attempt to contact the preparer who made the changes and discuss them. By using this "Best of Both" service you are basically asking this preparer to sign the return and put themselves on the line if there is a mistake or problem with the return. If you disagree with their treatment of a form/information on your return, I guess you're free to just file on your own but I don't know that you'd get a refund of the fee paid for the review.

I wonder why, if you are as familiar with the treatment of this form as you seem to be, that you'd ask for someone else to review it.

She's not asking someone to review it...the review of her tax information is included in whatever H&R block tax prep program she chose (of which I am in no way familiar). We had the option (doing our taxes online with H&R Block) to have our self entered return reviewed by an expert H&R Block preparer to ensure all information was correct before sending it off. We declined as we didn't have any complex forms. So, I am assuming this is where the OP is at in her tax preparation steps.

OP, I would most def keep trying to contact the preparer/reviewer who has made the change...AS WELL AS stopping into the office at your soonest convience to discuss it with either the office manager OR the preparer herself. It sound as though you know this form well and I'm assuming it is a form you have recieved every year since the sell of the estate (please correct me if I am wrong). If all else fails, kindly take all of your documents elsewhere to have them prepared properly. :)

Hope this helps!
