Need advice - fence etiquette

For the other view point and rural life. In Wyoming the rule is that when you look at the fence one owner is to maintain the right side and the other the left and split down the middle. That is for shared property line.

However, the pasture neighbor said that our horse went over to his pasture a few times last summer. The fence is really bad and it is our fence. DH and he struck a deal, the neighbor is getting a hydrolic fence post pounder and we are buying the fencing supplies for our part. The guys will then work together to get the entire 1 mile of fencing done, both our and theirs. Each party is buying our own supplies but we are then helping each other to set the fence.

Farm life is different from city life.

It sure is. The fence posts go ON the property line & the barbed wire goes on the side of the farmer who paid for it & put it up! I didn't grow up with farmers pooling resources like this, but it would be nice to be able to work together.

I am glad to see this post ~ We are in need of replacing our fence soon and I was wondering about this. In our situation, we have fence on 3 sides of our yard ~ 2 sides of the fence are ours and were here when we bought the house. The third side was put up by our next door neighbors about 10 years ago. The fence is the typical cedar stockade fence ~ 6 feet on our 2 sides and 4 feet on the third side.

I don't want to replace with the same style fence as I would rather have a nicer looking fence put up, but do I only replace the two sides that are ours and leave the ugly 4 foot stockade fence on the third side? Do I ask our neighbor if they would mind if we replaced their 4 foot fence (at our cost) with a different style(leaving them with 3 sides of their old stockade fence, and one side with the new style fence)? Do I just put up our new fence along side their existing 4 ft fence? Or am I stuck replacing just the two sides of the same style stockade fence? Ughhh ~ I don't know what to do!

I your case I would put a 2nd fence on the neighbor with the 4 ft of fence(not removing his 10yo fence)...Because your changing the fence will make the rest of their fencing not match...Call the local fence companies..they will usually advise on a sticky situation like this. BTW the Cape is one of those few places that allow the owner to have the nice side(or at least it is optional)

I wouldn't bring up the idea of paying half of someone else's fence, and if they asked me to, I wouldn't think twice about saying no. (the only way I'd ever think about that would be if both families were having the same fencing installed at the same time and they agreed on a single fence between the 2 properties)

I have really never heard that; it doesn't happen here, not in residential neighborhoods at least.

1. Replace your own fence sections leaving the neighbor's fence there.

2. Replace your own fence sections adding a redundant fence of your own against the neighbor's fence.

3. Ask your neighbor for permission to replace just the section of his fence next to your yard at your expense.

4. 1, wait a while, if the neighbor approaches you regarding replacing his fence, offer to split the cost of the section next to your yard.

My aunt was forced to pay half the cost to fence a field. Not a happy camper!
