Hi. I have seen a lot mentioned about renting points, but have not been able to find anything that helps me understand it... Can anyone rent points? Is this a better deal than staying at a resort, where exactly are you staying? I really don't know anything about this, but I get the impression that you can get great rates by renting and would like to know more. If anyone is willing to educate me on the point renting system, I'd really appreciate it! I did check out the FAQ on the rent/trade board, but it didn't help me because I don't even know the basics... TIA!! :flower:

try looking at disneyvacationclub.com this is where you will be staying.
or the resorts you have a choice of staying at
you are renting the points somone has purchased
it requires x amount of points to stay in a resort per night depending on the room size
the points charts are also listed on this site if not go to dvcresale.com
it in genral will cost 10 a point
to give youerself a comparison you can book these resorts on the Dinsey website
you will find renting points will cost you a lot less
being fair you could rent a studio at the Boardwalk for 450.00 depending on the season sometimes it will be more and it also depend on the view for sun-fri 5 nights the same room through disney will easily cost 1500 with discounts
the rest of the does and don'ts should be covered on the board it is up to you who you want to deal with and the terms in all cases you should be supplied with the confirmation letter before paying the full amount and also have something in writing from the person as to what you are renting with dates prices room etc. just for some protection
good luck

Anyone can rent points. Here's how it works. Someone else owns points in the Disney Vacation Club. You rent the use of their points for a stay and they make the reservation in your name. They retain control of the reservation. You can stay at any of the DVC's (Beach Club, Boardwalk, Saratoga Springs, Old Key West, Villas at Wilderness Lodge) as long as there is availability.

The rooms at the DVCs are on a points system. You can look at the DVC points charts at the top of this page and it will tell you how many points each night costs. It varies depending on the day of the week (S-R are much cheaper than F&S), the time of year, the DVC, and the size of the room chosen. You add those up for a total number of points and that tells you what you're looking to rent. For example, when we rented, we wanted a one bedroom villa standard view at the BW. We looked that up and it was 16 points a night (in January), we stayed S-W for 4 nights, for a total of 64 points. Then we went looking for someone who was renting 64 points. If you're renting more than 7 months out you need to find someone who owns that particular resort. Within 7 months of your date any points will work at any resort.

On average the points seem to rent for $10 ish, but sometimes you will see them as high as $12 or even $15 for really hard to get stuff, or as little as $6 or $8 if someone has points that must be used immediately before they expire. I would plan on about $10/point. We happened to get $9, so $9 x 64 points = $576 for a 4 night stay in a one bedroom at the Boardwalk. You can see why people think it's a great deal. You find people to rent from on the rent/trade board.

After you find someone, they check availability for you, and if they can get your dates, they make a reservation in your name. Many people will have you sign some kind of contract and you will usually be asked for at least some of the money up front. Everyone does it differently. Work with someone you're comfortable with because it requires trust on both sides, you because you give them money but they control the reservation, and them because they're committing their points, and if you renege it's bad for them. You will usually have to pay the balance 30 days out and then it's yours no matter what, because the member points would be adversely affected if you cancelled at that point, but again, everyone does it differently.

When you get to the DVC, the reservation is in your name, they treat you (usually) like a member, and you get most of the DVC perks. It's all OK with Disney too, so you're not doing anything underhanded.

So that's all I can think of, hope it helps. You can pm me if you have more questions, or ask the people here - they seem to know everything!

I've not actually rented points (was going to, but ended up buying instead), but I think I understand the process.

DVC works on points. The number of points required depends on the resort, the size of the room and the time of year. The resorts are the "Home-away-from Home" resorts on the Disney site - Old Key West (requires fewest points, has largest rooms), Boardwalk Villas (standard view requires less points but are hard to get), Beach Club Villas, Villas at Wilderness Lodge, Saratoga Springs (requires more points than OKW, but fewer than the rest). The room sizes are studio (one room with a queen bed and a sleeper sofa, kitchenette, balcony), 1 bedroom (bedroom with king bed and jacuzzi tub, living room with sleeper sofa, full kitchen, washer & dryer, balcony), 2 bedroom (put a studio and 1 bedroom together - there are some dedicated 2 bed that have two queen beds in the second bedroom instead of the queen/sleeper sofa), grand villas (3 bed - master bed with king bed and jacuzzi, 1 bed with 2 Q and 1 bed with 2 double beds, larger living areas including a sleeper sofa, etc - not all resorts have grand villas). There are different season which are similar, but not the same as Disney's seasons. Expect to need more points around Christmas and Easter, less in off season times.

This site has point charts so you can figure out how many points you will need. The standard rental rate seems to be $10-12 per point. So if you needed a studio in early December at VWL, that would take 104 points. This would cost you $1040 to $1248 to rent. Rack rates for a WL woods view room would be $1795 and you will be getting a kitchenette. Saving are greater if you want a larger room (since the only option is DVC and cash prices for DVC room are high) or at other resorts like Beach Club where the rooms are more expensive.

You will be renting from a DVC owner. They will make the reservation in your name and you will pay them. To find an owner who wants to rent points, go to the Rent/Trade board and post when and where you want to stay.

One thing to remember, you will not be able to cancel once you have agree to a rental. Due to restrictions on banking and expiring of points, the owner may lose the value of their points if you cancel, particularly within 31 days of the stay. So most owners require a significant deposit and the entire balance paid at least 60 days before the vacation dates, with no refunds if you need to cancel. Most will work with you to reschedule, but can only do so before the points expire.

So renting points is a great way to get larger and better accomendations at a great price, but you do sacrifice some flexibility. If you are OK with this, read more on the Rent/Trade board and other websites and then go for it.

Thanks, that cleared up a lot! I'll be doing my research, it'll be easier now that I have some clue as to what I'm looking for! :flower:

OK, I looked at the points calculator and it says I will need 40 points for my stay at OKW (studio) May 1-5... So it should be about $400, right? Besides the point rental fees, are there other fees I should know about? Is it too late for me to try to rent points for this trip? TIA for all your help!

There are no other costs.

It is pretty short notice, so there may or may not be any availability. The only way to tell is to have a member call and check.

By the way, the studios at OKW have two queen beds instead of the queen/sleeper sofa. This can be good or bad depending on your party. From what I understand, the OKW studios are not much if any larger than the other resorts studios - it is the 1/2 bedrooms where you really gain the room.
