I have a small area by my porch, in Indiana, where I would like a flowering bush or small flowering tree. Nurserys say nothing will grow in the shade, but we don't want it to be large, it will block the porch and window. Any ideas? It is finally getting warm enough to plant something here, if it stops raining long enough! Thanks for the info!

Azalea or holly might do nicely. What zone are you in? Does it need to be a bush? You could try hostas. They die back in the winter, but come back even fuller the next year. They have a very graceful purple or white flower on a long flower stalk and they do great in the shade.

:)

I would go with an upright Azalea, you can keep it the size you want. I have an orange and a yellow in the shade, They are planted with my hosta, they flower every year. I prune them yearly to keep them in the shape and size I want.

Shows you how thoroughly I read postings. I thought you were looking for a tree or bush to PROVIDE shade. I'm wondering why everyone is suggesting small things, especially the hosta!!! I'm thinking, that's not gonna give them ANY shade!

DUH!!! :o
