Just saw this thread. While I've not had that type of surgery, I did have back surgery at age 13. I have scoliosis (curvature of the spine). They implanted & attached an 11" stainless steel rod to my spine in 2 places & bone graphed over where its attached. So basically, my spine does not bend at all where the rod is, just above & below the 11" rod. I spent 2 weeks in the hospital & 6 months in a body cast. Real fun for a 13 yr old high school active freshman.
But ya know what? Those 6 months went real fast. And I still did ALOT of activities while in the body cast. Marching band, ice skating, roller skating, bike riding. (Almost got killed riding the bike. ) OK, did have to give up gymnastics & horseback riding though.
You make adjustments (like I couldn't shower for 6 months ), and you get thru it. Your better in the end.
Stack up a bunch of hobbies or projects around the house if you think you won't be all that active. Good time to clean out those drawers maybe or organize those pictures.
