My mother-in-law, her 2 sister's and I get together for a weekend every year.
This year is my turn to set a theme for the weekend and a craft project, need help thinking of a simple craft project that can be done in no more than a couple of hours. One year we painted ceramic house, next year we cookie mix in mason jars. Thanks for any ideas.

Sorry forgot to mention our sister's weekend gathering is mid Oct.

Hmm, my first thought was to make a Christmas ornament. (I'm weird - I enjoy that any time of year!) I have several made from the clear glass balls that are easy, but I'm not sure you can get those at this time of year.

How soon will this be? Before Easter? I've enjoyed doing Pysanky. (Ukrainian Easter Eggs) It's easy enough - I've done it with a group of homeschool kids grades 4 & up. Of course, the younger kids made simple patterns. Here's a picture in case you don't know what I mean.

This site has instructions, but a Google search will show quite a few other sites.

Oh my word, those eggs are beautiful! I've never seen such exquisite work like that! How long does it take to make these? I agree about the Christmas ornament, maybe something with family theme, or possibly a family tree. One year my mom made everyone a shadow box with our family tree for Christmas. The tree was, well literally a tree, and each family member was represented by an apple hanging on the tree. I still cherish that picture!

Those are really lovely, aren't they? Of course, mine aren't nearly as nice but I'm very pleased with the results. The day I did them I wasn't all that thrilled because I was looking at pix of eggs done by people who'd been doing it for years. It's surprising what a little distance can do for perspective. ;)

How long it takes depends on how much detail you want, how many colors, how big the container is holding the dye (i.e. how many eggs can be dyed at the same time), etc. When we've done it with students (who had never done them before) we planned about 3 hours. A few of them spent the entire time putting on wax & dying them and then had to take them home to finish taking the wax off. Most finished easily in that amount of time.

What about no sew fleece pillows? They are super easy.

hand made paper making? SOunds hard but it isn't you just buy molds (those stone cookie molds work nicely) then buy the paper pulp at ACMoore or similar store. Follow the directions. Then use markers or water colors to decorate.

card making lots of supplies out there now. with ink and stamps

sculpy clay make all kinds of things out of that. http://www.sculpey.com/

oh how about painting on glass. You use just very simple stencils and special paint and then bake it in the oven

Stenciling anything....slate, boxes, frames, etc........
