I am in need of a new vacuum. I have heard that Dyson is great. They are so pricey though. Are they really worth the money? I need one that sucks up a lot of hair! Do these vacuums have a fiilter or how exactly do they work? Thanks for any input:thumbsup2

We have 3 dogs and 2 cats plus 3 girls with long hair. I love my dyson, it is amazing how it picks up the hair. The dysons are bagless and because my dd's all have long hair most of it gets caught in the brush, so I have to clean that out. I love my dyson.

Which one do you have?

Sorry I have nothing good to say about the Dyson - please ck previous posts on the subject. Stay away from them - not worh the money. Speak to any appliance repair that does vacuum repair and they will tell you to stay away from them. They loose their suction after a couple of years. Google them also. We had the animal one for about 4 years - it is in the garbage right now. I would not even try to sell it on Craigslist to get a few dollars for it. THEY are NOT worth the money. We put over $100 in repairs and within a weeks time, it lost its suction again and the guy told us there was nothing more he could do for it - he had replaced the belts, etc. We spent so much money on this - you would think we would have had it longer than that. We have two dogs, 2 daughters with long thick hair. We asked for a vacuum from a family member for Christmas and we now have a Bissel Pet vacuum. So we will see how long this one will last.

That is not good news:sad2:
I guess I will have to check out some more reviews after I get back from church. I have never heard anyone say they were horrible. I just dont have good luck with vacuums. I want to get one that will last and get up all the pet/people hair that we have in our house. I will take suggestions of any vacuum that is wonderful :thumbsup2

My advice....buy a Kirby.

My kirby broke, I bought a Dyson and to be honest, I don't think it's any better than the $69.00 hoover I have in my basement.

Maybe I am spoiled because the Kirby was just incredible. As soon as I have some extra $$$$$$$$, Dyson is being demoted to the basement and Kirby will be replaced.

Not pleased with my Dyson...in fact, I just bought a Kenmore canister with bags (HEPA) because our Dyson is not working right now. We bought it in 2005 and we have a lot of hair to clean up, I'm not sure if that is the problem, but the suction has gone kaput. I cleaned it out real good including the brush, but to no avail. We have the yellow one, it's probably the least expensive, but I don't think that should matter. I think it's called D14 or something like that. Good luck with your search!

I would recommend Oreck. They make very good vacuums.

I have had good luck with Hoover. I subscribe to Consumer Reports online, and it is worth the money! They don't rate Dyson too well. I also got a canister one they recommended, forget the name. Now, the Hoover ones that I've gotten were very inexpensive for upright ones, and they're bagless. They don't seem to be working so well now, but after 3 or 4 years of heavy use, I got my money's worth from them.

I also love love love my new Hoover Platinum cordless one, for the kitchen area (with my kids, I vacuum the kitchen at least twice a day!). It was pricey for a cordless ($150 or so) but it does so well!!! I may buy an extra battery for it. It even does a decent job zipping over some rugs.

I'd check out some reports first, as Dyson is expensive.

Kenmore also gets good reviews.

We have a Eureka The Boss based on Consumer Reports -- AFTER we returned our overhyped, underperforming Dyson Animal. I can't help but wonder if they are like Land Rovers, people like the status and convince themselves they are worth something, even though they perform like garbage.

I love mine!! I've had mine for almost 2 years. It does an amazing job. I use it twice a week (sometimes more). I got mine at Kohls with a 30% off.

I does a great job cleaning up (way better than my hoover), is that it is light weight and very easy to manuever!

I love my Dyson! I can't believe how much stuff that vacuum gets up, compared with the old Dirt Devil we had. My husband got ours for around $150 (don't remember the model number, but it was a mid-level one) in January @ Target two years ago...that is when they clearance out last year's colors.

I've had my Dyson Animal for almost 5 years. It still has phenomenal suction. I vacuumed my home with my Hoover before I bought the Dyson. Came home, put the Dyson together, vacuumed again. I had a full canister of dust and hair and was completely shocked (and grossed out).

We have two dogs (a cocker spaniel and a schipperke). The Schipperke sheds like crazy. The vacuum still does a remarkable job after 5 years of abuse. In addition, we live in the land of red clay rather than soil and the Dyson does an excellent job or removing the red clay dust from my carpets. We owned several different brands and units before the Dyson. If we replace the current Dyson for some unforseen reason, it will be with another Dyson vac.

We had a five year old Animal DC07 that was starting to lose suction and I hadn't been happy with it for a while. After I bought a new DC17 Animal at Target on Black Friday, I was reading reviews on other options. Someone suggested taking the dust collection bin apart to clean the inner cones. All you need to do is remove three star shaped screws (at least on the model I had). There was lots of dust caked on inside in there that I used compressed air to blow out. (Warning: Open the bottom of the dust collection bin before you take it apart it will be really hard to re-align the stick that releases the bottom of the container--if the bottom is open, you can see where the stick is going to line it up MUCH easier).

After I put it back together, it worked great again. I sold it on craigslist and the new owner is very happy with it.

Hi

We tried several kinds of vacuums since our dog, an Akita, sheds enough to make another dog out of all the fur.

After going through a few regular uprights that didn't pick up the fur, we tried a shopvac. It was OK and did a decent job but it was a lot of going and back and forth over the same area.

Friends recommended the Dyson Animal and we got one. This was a few years ago. We have loved it from the minute we took it out of the box and tried it. It sucked up the fur so easily. We had to empty the canister numerous times just vacuuming the family room. That goes to show how much fur was left behind from the other vacuums.

Thanks
Noreen

I wouldnt take another dyson if it was given to me free. It spends more time at best buy being repaired then home with me, in fact its there right now. I have an old bissell that i pd 60$ for at walmart years ago that i use most of the time. even on its last legs it does better then my dyson. The repair guy told me they see more dysons come in for repair then any other vacuum!

Save your money. Check Consumer's Reports.

Just minutes ago my 9yo dd was on her knees with a small broom and a dust pan. I asked why she wasn't using the dyson and she said, "That thing doesn't pick up anything." It really just throws the dirt across the floor. It is heavy and cumbersome to use.

Same here. Our Dyson works just as well as the day we brought it home and we've had it for five years.

I did the "compare vacuums" test and was disgusted with everything the dyson picked up that the old piece o'crap left behind.

My next vacuum will definitely be a Dyson. :)

Love my dyson. We bought the first one 5 years ago, and then bought an the anmial this black friday. Dh loves to vaccuum with it b/c it picks up every thing. I have long hair and so do my 2 girls, plus we have a dog that loves to shed. We have been really happy with it. I've loved it b/c dh loves to vaccum with the dyson so he can see all the stuff that it picks up...;) I was just at Target today and saw that the new models were coming in so they had last year's model on clearance.
