My GPS died today (Garmin nuvi 200 18 mos.old). I heard it is not worth the cost to replace the battery.
Anybody know of a budget minded decent gps..what works for you?
Thanks!

Tom Tom, QVC has them, works great, gave as a gift and also have one
Also bought the Garmin as a gift for niece, LOVES it, hope it lasts longer than 18 mos, that is not a long time IMHO!

Walmart has them as does just about every store now.

While I can't suggest a specific one, I would say you might want to get one that says the street names as opposed to just "turn left in 50 feet", and also that you make sure you can get one with a car charger, nothing like being out and not knowing how to get back! Our garmin plugs into my cell phone's car charger.

Buy.com - I had a Magellen 1412 and dropped it and broke the screen, loved the gps and found a refurbished one for $69.99, can't beat that, works great. It has text to speech and a chime at the turns, and has Canada and US maps, helpful since I live in the Buffalo, NY area.

A daily GPS user here. I almost never buy extended warranties on anything. But I did some research and talking around prior to making my purchase and found that GPS units in general have problems. So I bought the 4 year x-warranty at Best Buy when purchasing Garmin 340 in 4/07.

Two months ago the unit started having screen difficulties. For my $30 x-warranty fee I got a brand new, and improved Nuvi 220 at no cost. Loved both the units, and wouldn't live without one.

The current Consumers Reports has a feature on GPSs for cars.

I drive wheelchair van for a living and I LUV my Garmin. I've had it over 2 years and never had a problem.

I'm not sure what cellphone carrier you have, but I have Sprint and they have built in GPS to some of their models and I think it is simply wonderful.:flower3:

"Died"??

Our Garmin StreetPilot died yesterday, while on vacation camping :(

Turns out it has a hidden RESET switch under the decorative faceplate on the front. Not sure if your model has that, too, but check since it brought the unit back to life.

Of course, it won't help a dead battery, but in our case the unit just "crashed" and would not turn on, even when plugged-in.
