Going to spend a weekend at Disney in August and it will be my first time in the area, so I'm unfamiliar with everything.
There will be two adults for sure and possibly one or two additional adults, but no children. And we are not looking for any fancy accommodations. A pool and continental breakfast would suffice.
Of course the place has to be clean and comfortable.
The one major thing we want is close proximity to the parks, so walking distance would be perfect but shuttle service is fine too.

So, throw out the names of the cheapest hotels/motels at me, please!

I believe Desert Inn & Suites regularly tops the list for cheapest hotels on Harbor. There is a pool, included basic breakfast, and it's one of the closest hotels to the entrance.

Most of the hotels on Harbor would probably fit your requirements. If you're not fussy, just go to a hotel booking website (Expedia, Orbitz etc) and see which comes up cheapest. The closest ones are on Harbor between the freeway and West Katella.

If you're willing to take a shuttle, some of the hotels on the ART route might work for you. I always make sure I'm within walking distance though, so I'm not at all familiar with the ART.

Just about a block away from Harbor Blvd is the Quality Inn & Suites. I will typically book the Best Western on Harbor Blvd for my runDisney race weekends but I forgot and booked later than I usually do. I discovered that most of the hotels on Harbor Blvd where booked for that weekend. I found the Quality Inn had vacantcies and the price was great (less than $70 a night) and this price includes continental breakfast.

Last Minute Travel is a great website, Expedia, Travelocity... they will all give you rates and pictures...

Have a Great time! and remember, sometimes closer means more $$$
Art offer's shuttles at $5.00 per day.. usually Garden Grove has prices a bit cheaper...

Super 8 on Katella is by far the cheapest hotel in the area. And it's only about a 10 minute walk to the main gate. Its where we stay every time we go.

It seemed like way more than 10 minutes to me. But, if you're a quick walker without little ones, it may be possible in 10 minutes... We stayed there once and it was too far for us. We've sometimes gotten the Quality Inn on Manchester for only about $10 more a night (prices vary, of course). It's nicer, has a much better breakfast and is about half the walk.

I'm glad to read a good review of the Quality Inn on Manchester. We are planning to stay there next year. We usually stay at the Carousel but we want to try something a little bit cheaper but still within walking distance. :thumbsup2

We are staying right across the entrance at Park Vue Inn our room is $150/night for a queen with bunk beds free parking which was a big thing for me and from what I understand a decent breakfast.

This is our go to place typically as well as AP holders. We have always had a good sleep and close enough to drive back for a break. It probably is closer to a 15 minute walk but definitely doable if you prefer.

This is somewhere I had been thinking of trying but was wondering how it was. Thanks for the feedback !

This is our Tied-For-Second-Place hotel.... First being Park Vue, with Desert Inn and Super 8 tied for second. Park Vue is routinely 2-3 times as expensive as Super 8, but, of course, it's across the street, I expect to spend more across the street!

I love Super 8's beds and pillows. They pass my white-sock test without a problem. The price is hard to beat! The breakfast is basic, but easy to carry with us on the walk to DL. The walk, for my family with a child, isn't "great" but it isn't bad either. In the mornings, we would stop at 7-11 on the way to grab snacks and sodas/water (I *hate* "filtered" LA water--still tastes thick to me), so the walk was about 20 minutes. If we didn't stop, it would be closer to 15 minutes if we weren't "rushing". On my solo trip, it was about 15 minutes to get there as well, and I tend to walk fast when I'm on my own. The only thing I really don't like about Super 8 is the walk at the end of the night! You pass about 10 hotels (I tried counting on google maps, but got dizzy moving the screen back and forth, lol). At each hotel, I would think, "Oh, I wish that was my hotel!"

Now, Desert Inn and Suites (aka DI&S) tends to win out over Super 8 for our family, as much as I hate to say it, for the walk. Prices are similar to Super 8, but DI&S is across the street... IMO, the beds suck, the towels don't cover a leg let alone a booty post-shower, the pillows are flat, and the elevators take f.o.r.e.v.e.r.... but at $69/night for a basic room, and across the street, I can deal with taking the stairs and bad pillows!

I'm a big fan of the Castle Inn and Suites, which you can get affordably through GetAwayToday.com with a 4th night free. We stayed there back in February and just today booked a return visit for this September ($350 total). The rooms were all renovated last fall and are excellent. Free parking at the hotel, and the short walk to the entrance of DLR is awesome. No breakfast, though.

I like the hotel indigo on Katella. Not sure if that is cheap enough for you but I also like the Hojo's. Anything along Harbor/Katella will be walking distance. The hilton is nice too and once in while it has a good sale.

Our favorite is the Hojo's on Harbor. Beds are super comfy, staff is beyond helpful and the facilities are all nice. Kids pool is awesome. Never have used he adult pool but it looks nice. They don't have a free breakfast but they do have free parking and a small store. Keurig coffee makers in every room. Plus its a hotel and not a motel which some people prefer. Walk is less than 10 minutes to the park.

My 2nd choice would be Desert Inn & Suites depending on the prices they have. Sometimes they have great rates and sometimes they're too high. They're beds are not near as comfortable but are decent. The pool is indoors which could be a plus or minus depending on when you're traveling. They do offer a small continental breakfast (toast, fruit, cereal, pastries, juice, coffee) but they also charge for parking and the coffee is terrible. They're right next to the pedestrian crosswalk so super short walk. Agree with PP on super slow elevators but you can always take the stairs!
