Need a ladies point of view (or decorators)

It's pretty good the way it is, to my taste at least. I like symmetry and dislike empty corners. :goodvibes
About the only thing I'd do is add draperies on the window (textiles make everything seem cozier) and switch out one or two of the throw pillows for ones in the apple green colour - they would make a nice pop!

Overall, I really like it! 👍🏻

@TLSnell1981 I’m pretty sure there is a loveseat facing the tele. (You can see a portion of the left armrest in the photo.)

I think I would consider building in some bookcases/shelving, the same color as the mantel, on either side of the fireplace, and moving one of those chairs up on the wall (at an angle, toward the doorway) for extra seating (and keeping the other one in storage for if you need it). As it is, the seating doesn’t look very functional (but I get what you were going for). You could have an electrician move the switches to the other wall.

I like how you softened things up with the fabrics and greenery. (Feng Shui). A lighted seasonal spray across the top of the fireplace could add to the ambience.

I mostly like it too. :goodvibes

The only thing that bothers me is the "column effect" from the large TV over the fire place. I might hang a couple of photos to draw the eye sideways a bit - one where you see the light on the wall by the window, and the other opposite it by the doorway,

It looks too busy to me. Less is more.

I’d get rid of the pillows (4 pillows on the leather couch seem like overkill) blanket, carpet under the table, and 2 chairs beside the fireplace.

The flowers/candle decor on the coffee table is nice, but not functional. You need space for food, drinks and remotes. :)

If this were me:

I would relocate the dining chairs and candle holders flagging the fireplace to the dining room. They just don’t seem to belong in the space.

Opt for a bigger tray on the ottoman and style with decor can be changed out seasonally. Flameless or regular candles will work very well here along with remotes placement.

Ceiling fan can be upgraded to remote status so pull chains can be removed where they don’t block the tv.

I would also swap the grey pillows for cream colored ones along with the area rug to cream to soften and brighten up the space. Plus the pillows/rug/blanket textures are a bit on the dated side along with fake plants/flowers. Aim for real plants or none at all.

I wouldn’t do curtains only because your crown molding around the window and room is beyond beautiful and it would take away from natural light.

I agree with you..I like it the way it is. My first thought was to change a few of the pillows to a bright colour for some pop. We should go into business together lol

I would move the chairs from the fireplace area,it's too tall/they're too small. Perhaps a tall bookcase on each side to macth that height, painted same color as walls? Or a tall figural tree on either side-Your furniture is pretty bulky,I like the coffee table but the display on it is too small for the large stuff already in room,a larger tray and display might be nice. Also I'd add some more color b/c personally I like color in a room, perhaps the pillows are a good start. I'd also say your rug is too small for the space- it should fill more of the floor to tie in the elements.

I think overall it looks pretty nice, but to my eye (and pictures don't do things justice), everything in the room seems too oversized for the room. I have similar issues in my home. While I have a spacious home, the rooms seem to be on the smaller side so I have to be really careful with furniture. But I doubt you're going to listen to us and go out and buy all new stuff! Plus, how things appear is really a subjective perspective.

I think the TV is way to big for the mantel. Realizing you don't have much choice here--it just overwhelms the wall. The heavy chairs on either side plus the heavier wall sconce candle things just seem to bulky for your size room. I'd remove those and put something "light" and airy over there. It seems so dark over there. I'd like to see something white or one of those twiggy "trees" with some lights or something? Love the window as is. I'd probably scale back the fan. Might put in a bit larger rug that is lighter/brighter. I'm not a fan of ceramic tile but I know it's big down south and everyone is used to it there. I'd cover it up more if I could. If you're going to use a throw and pillows, here's where you add some color.

Since the TV is in that room, I’m guessing you use it very frequently. Does it always look so “ready for company?”

Most peoples’ daily rooms look “lived in,” with remotes on the coffee table, bags of chips and soda cans, things they didn’t get around to putting away yet, and other assorted junk scattered haphazardly.

I'd first start with repainting the walls. That color combined with the size and shape of the place makes it look too dark and hallway like especially with the floor tile colors. A light shade (a light blue or some other color that brightens it up) could really help. You wouldn't have to necessarily change the color palette of the rest of the decor if you found a shade for the wall that compliments it. You might even consider repainting the mantle (or part of it) a white shade (there are many shades out there too).

I'm not the biggest fan of tvs hung ontop of mantles (we chose not to have our mantle wired for that) but it's a common thing to do. I'd agree with the tv size being too big. It's more that it's the ceiling height that is actually the problem because it's right almost touching the ceiling. But realistically going out and buying a smaller tv may not be what you'd want to do so maybe not much on that.

I'd remove the chairs flanking the mantle. Normally you'd see built-ins next to the mantle but I feel that trend has fallen out of favor so I'm not sure what you would put in the chairs place.

The coffee table I'd switch the direction of it and push it out a bit (it looks a little too close for knee room for the sofa). The tray is cute to me but I would remove the flower part to it and put that in a different place.

I'm a pillow person too but I would probably room 2 pillows from the sofa or remove the blanket but since I like the blanket I'd would just remove two of the pillows.

I do like your choice of patterns :)

in the room seems too oversized for the room.
I agree on the furniture for this size of room but figured like the tv probably not something any of us would want to just toss out or relocate (their furniture looked really nice too!) in favor of something smaller. But it was a thought looking at the picture with the size and shape of the room.

I think your furniture and tv are too large for your space. And your walls are too dark. Lightening up the walls and using less pattern in the room will make it seem bigger.

I would add white panel drapes to the window. Get a less busy rug, throw and pillows. Remove the chairs and sconces from the fireplace area and get a smaller ottoman. You need a different ottoman - that isn’t like your furniture to add some visual interest.

We all have different tastes. I've "decorated" 3 homes in past 10 years, all drastically different due to where they were located (suburbs, beach, mountains). And I'm constantly tinkering. So filter any comments through your own lens.

I agree with others that TV is a bit large for room. But, I think you can downplay that by having floor-to-ceiling bookshelves built in on either side using same finishing as fireplace, windows and doors. Will make it look purposeful. Also, books, games, pictures and other decor on shelves can add color and warmth.

Tray on ottoman/coffee table could be quite a bit larger and either white wood, cream or a pale gray weathered wood. A pop of color, which could be changed out seasonally, would direct the eye -maybe the pillows and a few candles on the tray.

If you frequently use the throw on the sofa, I'd put it across the back or over one arm diagonally rather than so squared off. Or, get a straw or fabric bin, roll that throw and a couple of others and put in bin. Will give a softness to balance all the black leather.

It's your room....enjoy it!

Having an ottoman as a coffee table myself, with a tray, I’m betting the tray was kept deliberately small so that feet can still go up on the ottoman - hopefully without knocking everything over.

Well since we’re reconstructing the whole room :rotfl2:some hardwoods would be nice!

But seriously, I think the room is nice as it is and could be improved with some of the tips above. It reminds me a little bit of the pics of our living room when we first moved in, vs how it looks now. A lot of changes over the years.

I’m a little surprised to hear this, built in shelves beside a fireplace seem sort of classic to me, no?

I would think so too but it seems like they've started to fall out of favor. I think it's more the older style making it feel more bulky whereas the style these days seems to be more airy so I could see doing floating shelves rather than a more bulky built in if doing built-ins. I think floating shelves in the kitchen have sorta outlived their trendiness but I don't think that's the same for next to the mantle.
