Hi all you wonderful and helpful cruisers.......I have been reading these boards for 3 months and accumulated so many helpful tips. I have what I hope is one more question before we leave on our June 29th Magic trip. I realize it will be HOT this time of year and I've noticed a few people mentioning they've purchased small electric fans for the room. What is your opinion as to the need for one and/or whether it will help. We were down in the West Indies this time last year in a hotel and even in a hotel the air conditioning never kept up with the heat & humidity so I am curious as to how you feel the ship's air conditioning in the staterooms is. I've heard the common areas are freezing and the rooms barely cool.

Thanks so much for your replies.

we have cruised several times, and I would have to say that based on how we felt, we would not have needed to have a fan.

I would have liked to have had a fan for night time. I like to have it freezing cold at night and then bundle up in blankets. It makes it easier for me to fall asleep to have it nice and chilly. We kept the temperature as cold as possible during the day and we were fine. But at night I was just too hot to fall asleep in a decent amount of time.

I didn't think that the common areas were freezing at all. Sometimes the elevators, stairs and hallways were very warm and stuffy. I never felt cold in a show or restaurant either. I did hear several people say that they liked that Disney was keeping the ship nice and warm for their kids. Maybe Disney has had a ton of complaints about the ship being cold and have decided to keep it warmer

On our first cruise (in a Category 4 cabin), I would have killed for a fan. It took the A/C forever to cool the room after each time that we opened the sliding glass door to the verandah. Even if the door were only open briefly. I don't think that you could ever say that we were "cool" during that cruise although the outside air cooled down nicely on our days at sea.

On our 2nd cruise (in a Category 10 inside stateroom), the A/C was more than adequate and I agree that a fan would have been totally unnecessary.

So both answers are correct. It's reallly up to you as to whether or not you think that you need one.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I appreciate you all taking the time to answer.

Towncrier, what time of year did you go? We too have a Cat 4 with verandah. I had heard that opening the door caused loss of AC and if you add extra humidity this time of year....YUCK!

We cruised last June and we were very comfortable in the room with the ac...it seemed to do a very good job...it is very humid out and we had all these wonderful "dreams" of sleeping outside on the verandah one night on the chairs, but after day one, we realized this dream was very unrealistic..it would have been way to humid for that.

We cruised on August 12, 2000. The inaugural 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. If I remember, the only "problem" with the A/C was when we were in port. The humidity just never seemed to go away. I don't know if a fan would have helped, but it certainly could not have hurt. Once we set sail (and at night), the A/C was fine.

Bon Voyage and enjoy that Cat 4. :)

Hi there. We were on the Magic on 4/27/02, and we took a small oscillating fan with us for our category 6 room. It was the best thing we took, other than the over the door shoe holder. We always like our house fairly cold 71-72 degrees. The a/c wasn't really a problem for us, but the stale air was... that is until we turned on the fan. What a huge help!!! We thought we would need it for our asthma, but that was under control. The fan sure did help in the ports. Our stateroom host loved it as well. My suggestion is to take a small one. Have a great trip!

What a great idea! A fan!
That would definitely help with the stale air even when you have a verandah - it does get muggy regardless!

Just a little bit of info. Target has a 12inch table fan on sale for 13 and kmart has a 10ince on sale for 10.

We brought a small travel fan and were glad that we did. The room temperature wasn't that bad, but it is just a little "stale" in the cabin without a lot of air movement. The fan also helped to drown out some of the hallway and ship noise.

Just curious. Did anyone ever ask Housekeeping for a small fan? I know hotels usually have them if you request...wondered if ship did?

Hey Dodie!
Rescue Dogs?
Indy?

Tell us more!:bounce:

Definitely take a fan. We were in a category 4 and I was always hot. I didn't take one because I assumed that if we needed air, we could open the veranda door. But it was hotter outside than it was inside so that didn't work. Also, I would have liked the noise. I took a white noise machine, but the fan would have helped.

Fawn, We asked housekeeping for a fan and they asked why we needed it. We told them it was warm in our room and they said they could make it cooler from there. (?) Then the next day there was a card in our room saying that the a/c had been repaired. While it was a little cooler, I was never comfortable.

Take a small fan just in case. If you don't and decide you need one later, you can't exactly run out to Wal-Mart to pick one up. :)

I think that I'll have enough to pack without trying to pack a fan!
Between the over the door shoe holder, the clock, the sound machine, the collapsable cooler, I'm not sure I'll have enough room for my husband and daughter!

We cruised last July (has it really been one year already:( )
and we didn't feel the need for a fan. Of course, I have NO idea where we could have fit it - maybe in between my six pairs of shoes??? ;)

:sunny: Since we're in a cat. 12, I figured the air might not even reach that low so I bought a fan. Picked it up at WalMart, a 6" Lasko fan with a digital alarm clock ($10.). Neat thing is it is square and will easily fit in the suitcase.

If you have a veranda and you go out at all during the day the cabin will never seem comfortable. Bring the fan.
