Nebulizer on board dream?

Hi all

Can't seem to find recent info on this one

I need to find out if the Dream medical service has a nebulizer available

It is a very common medical device, unfortunately needed by many
So I would assume that they do, but you know what happens when you assume!

My 3 yo ds had asthma during his first 2 years of life, whenever he got a cold, etc
It's called viral induced reactive airway disease

He has outgrown it. But I always want to have " ammo" with me just in case!

Any pediatric medical experiences would be greatly appreciated

Although I don't like hearing little ones not feeling well , I just want to know
I have options

No idea about the nebulizer availability, but what I did (DS had the same thing) is buy a small travel nebulizer. I didn't want to be in a situation where I needed something NOW and I possibly could have to wait or not know how to use it. It was fairly inexpensive and it was worth my piece of mind.

Ditto here. We always bring our own. Plus I imagine they would charge for the service..

Do you not have your own nebulizer? My daughter has her own nebulizer that we can travel with--it can run off battery, or plug into the car, or plug into a standard electric outlet.

I know this doesn't answer your question--but perhaps you should talk with your doctor about getting a nebulizer. Our insurance company paid for our daughter's nebulizer.

We do have a nebuluzer, although it's not a travel type

Certainly I will bring it if I need to
But was interested to know if any parents out there had the experience of using one on board

we have our own personal nebulizer also for when DD was baby/toddler. So glad we can use an inhaler now (she's turning 10 next month). If you need one, pm me. I pulled ours out of the cabinet the other day to donate to our local hospice store.

oops disregard! I think I was typing as you were posting!

The MC onboard has one or more if needed, but not to take it back to your Stateroom.
If the nebulizer is required, the MC is available 24/7 for as long as needed along with other breathing apparatus.

Good question. I was just packing ours with all the meds for our cruise next week and was thinking how much room it takes up. I like to have ours because when we need it we need it NOW and it keeps DS out of the hospital. I have to admit I'm just to lazy to call to see if they have ones to rent or to have in your room while on board.

Yes we do have one that we used daily during the first year of his life

I am most likely going to bring it along with all my meds etc
I want to be prepared and have peace of mind

Also after reading over some other medical experiences on board I now realize that the medical facility on board is not available 24/7

I would not want to be alone overnight with no neb available !

The MC and the Physician and Nurses are available 24/7 for medical emergencies and after care thereafter.
Feeling nauseous no, difficulty breathing absolutely 100% yes!

On our first cruise in 2008 we did not travel with my son's nebulizer. He hadn't needed it in such a long time we really didn't think about it. Wouldn't you know he ended up needing a treatment! Was having trouble breathing at night but wasn't an emergency. Waited til morning and went to the medical center. Was given a treatment then and there.

Had a pretty hefty charge on our account. Not sure now exactly what it was, maybe about $125 if I remember right. We had travel insurance so we filed a claim when we got home and we were reimbursed.

Needless to say we have traveled with it ever since! We have a big heavy one and flying with it has been an inconveinece. We just recently were able to get him an inhaler (age 8 now) so I am considering going to just traveling with the inhaler. Still kind of makes me nervous to not have the nebulizer but he hasn't needed it too much so I should probably stop worrying!

Good luck with what you decide. Either way though the medical staff was great just pricey.

The medical center IS available 24/7 for emergencies. They have hours for non-emergency needs.

And if the other poster's charge was only $125 for a neb treatment, that's not expensive at all...compared to a similar situation in an ER in the states.

We are bringing DS's, because he uses it twice a day every day. We don't have the travel kind either....in fact I didn't know those existed! ha! Time to look into that! You are right, they are dinosaurs!

I think I agree with you about taking it, though. I think even if DS didn't use it every day, I would want to bring his, in case he needs it ASAP, and lugging him to the MC, possibly waiting on someone, etc.. would be super stressful.

Also, if you are cruising somewhere where you haven't been before, you just never know how the air/humidity will affect him, so I think having it would give you more peace of mind.

Oh goodness, definitely look into the travel kind! My daughter's is so compact! It is a bit longer than my hand and is maybe three inches tall. The nebulizer and the cords, masks, hoses, cables, etc, all fit into a small black carrying case.

We rarely ever use ours for ds but that is such good information to have! Thanks for sharing. Our pulmonologist isn't a big fan of nebulizers...prefers to have kids to multiples puffs on an inhaler using a spacer rather than the nebulizer (he says 8 Albuterol puffs=one nebulizer treatment) so we haven't used it in a while.

I plan on looking into the travel type

I tend to bring quite a bit of meds, etc for the kids in general for " just in case"

So I decided just to bring the nebulizer
It's one of those things I just don't want to be without at 3 am
