NCY Hotel Near Statue of Liberty

Family of 5 here, we travel to NYC often, usually weekend trips but have gone longer. We find residence inns to be nice and able to accommodate 5. There is one we stayed at near Bryant Park that was downright spacious (for NYC). We have splurged for Marriott Marquis a couple of times which was very easy on a family of five, but usually reserve that for the week before Christmas (cheapest time we have found for nyc hotels).

I will be honest and say we often will just grab a Courtyard and bring the air mattress with us. This makes for very tight quarters but we don’t spend a lot of time in the room. Although our kids are teens now (17/15/15) and our most recent trip made us realize we might be pushing things a bit.

We like to stay at the Hampton Inn Carlstadt in NJ across from the Met Life Stadium. It is an extremely clean hotel with the bus stop for NYC right across the street from the front door. On the way back it drops you off in front of the hotel. It is the NJ public bus so they start at around 6:00 am and return up to past midnight. It is about a 20 minute ride (without traffic, factor more for early weekday mornings) and costs $9 return per adult, not sure about kids but it is less. The bus drops you off/picks you up at the depot on 42 ST a block away from Times Square and it is connected to the subway if you need to get to the Statue of Liberty. The hotel offers free parking and a free hot buffet breakfast. I checked for August 2 adults 3 kids and it gave me $169/night plus taxes. After discovering this gem we would never again drive in NYC and pay those hotel prices. Keep in mind that parking alone in the city would cost around $50/night and could be several blocks away from your hotel.

We just got back a few weeks ago from NYC. We are also a family of 5 (two teenage boys and a 2nd grader). We stayed at the Residence Inn in Lower Manhattan. It was a quick walk to Battery Park and the Liberty Island ferry. I think we paid about $375 per night but I thought it was a fair price for Manhattan. We had two double beds and a pull-out sofa plus a kitchenette...this was the biggest suite that the hotel offered, called the Maiden Corner room. The hotel had a free breakfast which is a huge bonus and savings for us. We would fill up for the day, grab a snack mid-day from a street vendor, and then do a nice sit-down dinner. I would definitely stay at this hotel again....it was right next door to the Fulton station, which gave us easy access to the entire city. I did a lot of research and priced out various locations and airbnb's and this was the best deal overall.

FYI, our itinerary for about the same amount of time looked like this. We bought the CityPass, which helped us save $$. We are from the west coast so the time change makes it difficult to wake up too early (and also teenage boys). But we were out the door by 9ish every morning.

Thursday - Arrived at about 5pm (drove from Boston where he had spent the first 3 days of our vacation). Grabbed pizza near our hotel and then took the train to Times Square. Walked around and had dessert at Junior's.

Friday - Arrived Battery Park around 10am. Spent about 3 hours doing the statue and Ellis Island. We then spent about 90 minutes at the 9/11 museum and memorial -- short walk and all walking distance from our hotel. Rested in the hotel for about an hour and then took the train to Chinatown for dinner and then to the Bronx for a Yankees Game.

Saturday - Train to Rockefeller Plaza to get tickets for Top of Rock. Went to FAO Schwarz then spent time in Central Park and then visited the Museum of Natural History before going to our 3:30 Top of Rock reservation. We then took the train to Little Italy for our dinner reservation at Nico's.

Sunday - Train to 5th Avenue, spent morning shopping then grabbed hot dogs and enjoyed Bryant Park. Train to MET and then dinner in Times Square and more shopping.

Monday - Train to Empire State Building then late lunch at Katz's Deli before heading to JFK for an evening flight.

We packed in a lot in four days and used public transport the whole time. We averaged about 8 miles walking per day.

We like staying in Secaucus NJ at La Quinta Inn and Suites - We have 4 people but the girls do prefer not sharing a bed. When we stay there we stay in a 1 bedroom suite with two queen beds and a sofa bed in the living room if that works for you. The hotel has a free breakfast (though not for your Statue Day) and an indoor pool. It is on a NJ bus line that goes straight to Port Authority. You would need to leave pretty early so it is probably a 20 minute ride before traffic starts to Port Authority. We drive when we stay there and parking is free. My daughter and I have taken the bus back after midnight no issues and it drops you off basically right at the hotel. I think it is the 302 NJ transit bus. The only thing is you would need to get a NJ bus ticket and a separate NY metro card.

In Manhattan we stayed at Chelsea Savoy once - we had two beds and a cot in an L shaped room. That was near Penn Station and we were right on the subway line that went to Battery Park. No idea about parking, free bagels for breakfast (again probably not early enough).

We are a family of 4. Just stayed in NYC 2 weeks ago and stayed at the TRYP Times Square South. So spacious and very close to the NYC Subway which is what we used to get to the Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island. We took the train from Penn Station which was a block away. Super easy and cheap.
