NBC celebrates Black History month....

I saw the "colored" comment and chose to ignore it. I figured more people would jump on that one.

But on to more important stuff, jalapeno cornbread is GOOD! If made right that is! YUM!

If I may intrude with a quick question...

could someone post a good recipe for collard greens? I rec'd a bunch in my organic produce delivery this week and have no idea what to do with them. TIA!!!

(plus, I promise to eat them legitimately south of the Mason-Dixon line ;) )

I don't think she was wrong. If her life experience is similar to mine [I live in the NE], many African Americans have and still do become offended when fried chicken etc etc is attributed to them as their specific cuisine. Those foods have been used in many a racist joke, and some people are still sensitive, as the jokes are still out there. Hope this explains it for you.

Actually, I live next door to you in CT :banana:and it's a bit different over here. Or at least with the people that I know that are african american. As a matter of fact we were joking around at work the other day because they are moving a person over into our department. This person made some racially offensive remarks where she was sitting, including using the N word. So, they move over to our area and sit her with an aisle full of African American's and hispanics.

The girls in that aisle were wondering if maybe we should throw her a welcoming party featuring some of our favorite pot luck foods, including most of what was on that menu. We all though it was hysterical. Of course this story hit and we all shook our heads and can't figure out what the big deal was. :confused3 Most of them are from down south though. Virginia, North and South Carolina. Maybe since they are "transplants" it's different though then someone who was born and raised here?:confused3

i almost did but I let it go, didnt want to take the bait

They forgot Sprite, Kool-aid, Orange, Grape and strawberry drinks on the menu. :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I live in the South just about every Southern Restaurant have that menu black or white. H@ll even go into Wal-mart get cooked collard greens here.

That menu looked delicious to me. I love jalapeno cornbread.

Who in their right mind can be offended by food?? I'm American of Mexican decent, and on Cinco de Mayo I don't run away from tacos or burritos!! get a grip ppl! Do the Irish get offended when corned beef and cabbage are served for St. Patty's? The back story to the chef reponsible for the menu is she worked for years to have a menu put together for black history month, finally gets it, and some PC jerk throws her under the bus, Wanda Sykes adds more fuel on her appearance on Jay's show. PC is going to wreck this nation.

Someone had to be offended by it to have the menu removed, a public apology, and for it to get on the news.

Honestly, it makes me sick how people will say other's are trolls or whatnot just for having a different opinion.

not really offensive....I think some people get upset because it furthers a stereotype...personally the sign wouldn't have bothered me...mostly bc i dont care lol...eat what you want to eat and forget the stereotypes...

I think this is rediculous. Do Hispanics get upset when they serve tacos or celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Do Germans get upset when sausages or sauerkraut are served? What about Italians or any other ethnic group? Hey, none of the rest of us have a WHOLE MONTH to celebrate our ethnicity. What's up with that????

Really, I think this is so petty. African Americans have lots to be upset about over the last 200+ years but I don't think many of them feel a menu board in a cafeteria is one of them.

The troll comment was over the top, I agree.

However--it is funny that the complaint was posted by a caucasian on the disboards and thus far noone can figure out who was upset b/c any non-caucasian who has commented on it....isn't.

Seems very odd to me and shows that it is much ado about nothing and how the establishment panders too easily towards being pc b/c folks will find problems in anything.

It isn't like the cafeteria staff put on black face while serving it.:confused3

I'm more shocked that the OP was reading Huffpo. ;)

So Fuzzy Zoeller should not have apologized either , right?

I had to look up the Fuzzy Zoeller comment and he sounded like an idiot the way he said it. "or whatever it is that they eat." Who demanded the apology?

I think this and the NBC lunch are two totally different things. One is a means to celebrate, the other is to purposely stereotype.

I asked my mon and several of her sisters (all of them are 50-70 something
years old, born and raised in SC. Moved to NY in the 60s and 70s) none
them have ever heard of jalapeno cornbread.

We've heard of cracklin' bread (which I hate). I love crackins and I love cornbread. I just can not eat them mixed together.:scared:

How can you compare the 2 situations? They are in 2 different contexts!!! Be rational in your logic, Fuzz made an insensitive comment when Tiger won the Masters, The Lady in charge of the menu @ NBC is black. Fuzz needed to and did apologize, Cafeteria lady does not need to apologize, in fact the PC Nazis should apologize to her...

Amen.

I really feel sorry for the NBC chef in this instance. She's said that the same idiot that started this nonsense, Questlove, is someone she serves lunch to every day. She must feel so bad by now. Sadly, this is the kind of nonsense that only fuels the fire, instead of bringing us all together. I'm surprised we haven't heard from dopey Al Sharpton about this yet.

That's because both of you are from above the Mason Dixon Line. Traditional "Black" culture was different above the line than from the South.

True but both of my parents are from the South and I've lived below the MD line for over 20 years now. I know the stereotype WELL and it's way too mixed up with the culture and the regional tastes. My parents made biscuits while all of my northern friends ate english muffins and bagels. We were all African American but the foods we grew up with were different. It has taken me forEVER to deal with the Southern nuances I resisted with the parents and adapt to where I'm living now.

As for the offense, like Joyce Meyer says we have over 20 reasons to be offended DAILY. We can choose to be offended or not. I try to think of the intention, as in legal connotations. Was it with malice aforethought or not? It makes a difference in how it received once you realize how it was intended.
