NBA at Walt Disney World

Here's the thing....if it's one day, okay.

But, I am hearing/reading that this thing may not be resolved tomorrow or even the day after that. How long is Disney going to allow the NBA to delay resumption of this thing? Is Disney just supposed to be held hostage and extend the playoffs indefinitely? Disney has workers and money and guests and a lot of things on hold until the NBA is done.

It's not just about them.

My goodness, this is so tone deaf. “It’s not just about them.” Wow. They aren’t doing this for them. The Bucks were willing to give up (forfeit!!) a PLAYOFF game to stand up for what they believe in. I am proud of my team for standing up to focus the attention on an incredibly violent injustice. Showing that there is more to life than basketball.

There is plenty of room for guests all over Disney property. Rooms and villas aplenty. Anyone who wants a Disney vacation can have their Disney vacation.

Let’s not drink too much of the kool-aid. The Bucks knew there wouldn't be any real consequence to their forfeit and they are up 3-1 anyhow. If either of those weren’t true, they wouldn’t have taken their ball and went to their resort.

I just want to remind everyone to stay respectful here.

Equality and inclusion shouldn’t be a political issue but in many ways it is in this country. We should all be having conversations and listening. I don’t want to see this thread have to close.

The Bucks were the driver. They have been involved in this fight for years at this point due to injustices within their team. The Bucks don’t cancel and I’m not sure the other two games do tonight. There are also talks of postponing more games or whether they should continue at all. This certainly isn’t because they had a game to throw away.

Technically they didn’t forfeit, unless that update has come along, but that’s a very irrelevant point here. The point is that this movement far exceeds the importance of these resorts opening, that almost certainly aren’t filled anyway. If they have to close off the entirety of WDW to get the point across that this stuff happening has never been acceptable, but absolutely disgusting that it’s still occurring in 2020, I would be 100% on board. Not everyone in the black community has the platform that these players do, so I applaud them for doing something, because they could do nothing, and I don’t believe that’s how people in their position should go about situations like this

Nothing is "on hold" because of the NBA. WDW can't even fill the resorts that are open for general guests. If it weren't for the NBA, there would be hundreds of CMs still furloughed right now. There is no way general guests would have brought in the $150 million the NBA is paying WDW to create the bubble. No general guest was turned away from WDW because the NBA is there.

No other group of workers could pull this sort of work stoppage without losing their job. I have no respect for this type of job action.

I remember when PATCO union tried this. President Regan warned them return to work or your fired. Yes President Regan fired them.
Professional athletes don’t have a typical job. They have a platform that their ownership and league officials have allowed them to use. They are using it.

I apologize as i haven't followed this thread but did the NBA pay Disney in advance for all the rooms ? Just wondering what the cancellation policy is :)

I made my own choice; fired them all myself. Haven't watched any games and have no plans to.

I care about black lives.

If I thought not showing up to work tomorrow would make all those people who don't care about black lives suddenly give it enough thought to care, I would stay home, sit out, and accept the consequences. For too many in this country, the only way they will care about inequality is if their own quality of life is impacted. For many of those people, not being able to watch their favorite sport is a travesty. And maybe in their reaction to that, they will be forced to acknowledge that what happens to black men in this country is a true travesty.

So yes, if I were them, I would not show up to work tomorrow. Especially if I were a black male, whose job was to entertain people who could not care less about the plight of black males in this country.

My DS12 loves basketball and has watched at least a part of every single game since the season resumed. His daily routine since then has included sitting down and watching basketball at some point. Of course, tonight, I had to explain to him why there was no basketball to watch. So, yes, it will cause conversations in some households this evening.

You don't seem to be aware of the National Labor Relations Act. NBA players are not government workers prohibited from striking as the PATCO workers were.

I’m not sure. I don’t know if there was ever a cost directly paid to disney revealed. The $150 million price range included several non-Disney things too.

I don't think anybody knows. However since everybody knew there was a chance COVID would shut down the bubble I'm sure there is some kind of cancellation clause in the contract. Finishing the playoffs was never a for sure thing though I don't think anybody thought this would be the kind of thing that might end it.

For now, players and owners are in lock step b/c unlike in normal business, money is not yet at risk (since the NBA made the choice to postpone vs forfeit)...and unlike essential services, there is no "security risk" for no play - this is totally non-essential.

I mean, big picture - with the postponements, no one's lost anything yet. And if anything, in a summer of decreased ratings in these playoffs, a cynical person could even say this action was an attempt to goose the ratings and to re-spotlight the sport, so it was ALL gain. In a "there's nothing to lose b/c ratings are so low" mentality or as many know the saying - there's no such thing as bad publicity/press (any and all press, however gotten, is great).

Now, if money starts to really be at risk (aka - the players do something big and push hard to cancel the playoffs), I have a feeling the owners and the players will no longer be in lock step, especially when it comes to future year salaries, which will be partly based on this year's revenues...
