thinking of cruising in may for the first time. i'm still a little confused about the difference between a navigator's verandah and the verandah? can someone explain? do both have plexiglass covering the open area? and if you've stayed in the navigator's, was it worth the extra, or should we go for the regular verandah? we're hoping forsomething open air.

We've done both so I hope I can help.

The regular veranda has either a plexiglass bottom (most of them - all the ones on the side of the ship) or a metal bottom (near the back of the ship). They all have an open top and come with two chairs and small table.

The navigator veranda has a metal bottom and a metal top with a porthole cut out (open - not plexiglass). There a less of them and they are located in the back of the ship. They have one padded wood chair, a small wood table and a padded bench. The opening on the Wonder is oval and bigger than the round opening on the Magic.

We prefer the navigator veranda for a number of reasons. It is cozier, cheaper, and not as windy.

The navigator rooms only hold 3 people so that may or may not play a part in your decision.

Barb has some great pictures on her web site at www.castawayclub.com check them out.

Hope this has helped.

i was in a Cat 6 verandah cabin that had solid metal across the bottom. I felt at the time that i would rather have had the open veranda for more sun. We got great afternoon sun on our starboard side location but felt a little closed off. But if you have any vertigo, though, you will probably prefer being more closed in. Can't comment about the wind, though.

:sunny: I Have a Cat 6 room in August I will see how I like it. I wanted the open not the covered one. When you have there people I don't think the Nav would let us all look out at the same time. :sunny:

Navigator's verandah cabins are Category 7, the regular verandah cabins are Category 6, which are more expensive. I know the term "Navigator's verandah" sounds more fancy, but you have less of a viewing area to the outside than with a regular, fully open, verandah. I think there are people who do like one over the other, but it's a matter of your personal taste. As for me, I like the idea of a regular fully open verandah because then you can see the ocean from inside the cabin and not have to actually walk out to the verandah and look out a "window" type of opening. If you are a party of 3 people or less, you can book either one, because the Navigator's verandah cabins only hold 3 people, while many of the regular verandah cabins can hold up to 4 people.

I also recommend going to Barb's site, she has wonderful pictures that show the difference quite clearly.

We just returned from the 1/24 Magic and loved, loved, loved a regular verandah! We were in a Cat 5 (which is like a Cat 6 - only one deck higher) and we loved how open the verandah made the room feel. To us, it was our "living room"! We spent time there reading, dozing and enjoying evening cocktails. We had connecting rooms and our kids (12 and 10) spent time "next door" playing cards, games and just watching the sea go by. We could also dry out wet things during the day - used clothes pins and attached things to backs of chairs. It was breezy but never as windy as on the ship's decks. Go for the verandah - we loved it!

And loved the open verandah. Don't think I would have liked the navigator's verandah, but didn't try it out. An open verandah is a must for us from now on. It was fabulous. Like having your own, private deck. We loved, loved, loved it!

Last August we were upgraded to the Naivgator's verandah from an oceranview room and we were very grateful for that, but we rebooked for August 04 while still on the Magic and will have a full verandah for less than we paid last year.

I am so looking forward to it!!! I know how much we enjoyed the Navigator's verandah so I can only imagine how nice it will be to see that water without standing up.
