Please help if you can. I have naturally curly hair and after I was diagnosed with a thyroid problem and began taken the meds my hair has become lifeless, brittle, frizzy, and THIN. OK and it doesnt help that I color my hair. So today I went with my mom to the hairdresser (I havent been in two years for a trim) and decided to go for it. Well once I sat down the lady said, "Your ends are sooooooooo dead. You need about 4 inches off!" I told her to go for it and she did. I dont ever remember my hair being this short (above the sholders at this point).

My question is. Is there something I can use in my hair to bring the life back into it and make it grow back long? HELP! :confused3

Did you get layers? My hair is naturally curly, but it's long right now. I used to have it much shorter. Longer layers worked wonders. Stay away from gel, as that tends to weigh hair down. I use Bed Head After Party instead and I love that stuff!

Your hair will grow regardless to how it looks. Now, to take care of it to make it not damaged, you need to be gentle with it and use a good conditioner. Just about any conditioner will do as long as you leave it in for about 5 minutes.
There are a couple really good conditioners out there that are cheap too. Dove and the Fruitsomething or other.
I would not use too much conditioner on a daily basis if it's thin. It will weigh it down too much.
Is all the damaged hair cut off? If it is, then you are starting fresh. If not, then the split ends will climb up the hair shaft and damage the rest.

Make sure and use a wide tooth comb, and don't blow dry unless you have to.
Anyway, that's all I know. :)

And for product I'd suggest Nioxin for your hair type.

I am not big on pushing product but I had a client with thyroid issues use this and her hair has done an amazing turnaround! it is a professional product and will cost you more than drugstore brands but I would still try seeing if you can get your hair over this hump!! good luck!!

OK. I use gel "every single day", so I guess I am going to check out that Bed Head stuff. I also wash and condition my hair every single day. Am I over doing it with the washing? Maybe I am washing all the oil out or something?

She did cut all the splits off. It was ALOT of hair. I love long hair and I hate it this short, but I looked horrible with those long stringy hairs hanging below my shoulders. Its not like it was pretty and healthy looking.

I have really curly hair that tends to dry and frizz but is thick. I don't wash mine everyday but do condition everyday.

Have you looked into a volumizing conditioner and shampoo? I know the pantene volumizing shampoo works. I used it one time at a friends house. Had an afro that wouldn't stop lol. I wouldn't use a deep conditioner but maybe once a week because it would just weigh your hair down. I love Biosilk products. It keeps your hair smooth and soft. I also love the Loreal product line. I use the Green label line for really curly hair.

My guess is that you probably are adding to your problem by using gel (very drying most all of the time) and washing every day. Very often when someone has naturally curly hair you don't need to wash every day.

Check out the book Curly Girl and the naturallycurly.com forums. I only shampoo about every 2 wks and my hair has never been healthier. I condition and gel everyday and my curls have great definiton!

I have naturally curly hair, and also color....I color at Regis and have found their brand of shampoo/conditioner for colored hair works pretty well for me (I used to really like the Herbal Essence brand for colored hair, but they changed the formula a few months ago and it doesn't work for me anymore :sad2: ).

Probably my best tip is to rinse your conditioner out using the coldest water you can stand. Using hot water to wash and rinse your hair does make it dryer! I really like hot showers, so this is was hard for me to want to do, but I definitely notice the difference if I don't make sure and at least make my condition rinse in cold water.

I DO use gel everyday (although I try and take weekends off from washing my hair, or at least 1 day of the weekend). Using gel really makes my curls have great definition and keeps the frizzies away.

Good luck!

Oh, P.S. I have also found that for my hair no layers or very long layers work best. If I have short layers my curls disappear and I'm left with the 70's feathery look!

Two words: Redken Anti-Snap. It is a leave-in treatment you apply to freshly-washed hair. I have fine, breakable hair--not thin but just I guess medium in volume. I could never get it to grow past my shoulders--it would break because the hair wasn't strong enough to support the weight when it got too long.
Now it's almost down to my bra strap and much healthier and looks thicker, too. I really swear by this product. It takes about 2 weeks to see it working, just fyi.

My daughter has curly/frizzy hair and it does much better with washing every 2-3 days..yep she can go 3 days because her hair and scalp are dry. We use the L'oreal Vive line, the bottles are orange. Of course having a thyroid problem and being on meds isn't the same as just having curly hair. My DD straightens hers all the time, drives me nuts...I think she looks cute in curls!

In the thyroid-problem world you have what is called "hypo-hair". Once your body adjusts to the new medication (think 6-8 months) your hair should be back to normal. I am dealing with the curly frizzy limp thin nightmare of "hypo-hair" right now too. I am so tempted to get it all cut off but I look horrible (ok, worse!) with short hair!

Yeah, definitely don't wash your hair every day. I think that's okay for oily hair, but curly hair tends to be much dryer. I wash mine every 2-3 days. When I was washing it every day, it was always very frizzy.

My hairdresser is the one who told me not to use gel. She says it weighs down the hair and makes it flat. Since I stopped using gel, I've noticed a huge difference in how my hair looks. It looks much healthier now.

Another curly haired hypothryroid here! So far the best products I have ever used are the "Bed Head" the ones designed for curly hair, it's called Curls Rock (I think). The shampoo and conditioner are very moisterizing, better than anything I've ever tried and the leave in conditioner, etc for after washing are amazing, my hair hangs in little perfect ringlets now. There was a promo going on where you got small size bottles of each curly hair product in one package for a pretty good price. One of the hard parts is when you get your meds just right and your hair starts to grow back in, then there's different lengths of hair all over - it's quite an adventure but at least with curly hair you can kind of blend it in.

I went 50 years with very oily straight hair that I had to wash every day in order to have it look halfway clean.
After chemo I now have very curly dry hair. It is growing in very slowly and it is very dry and brittle.
I have been using Dove moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, and it is better, but I will be reading this topic and trying all the suggestions too.
I also dye my hair because it came in 4 different colors of grey, from white to dark black/grey, with different color patches all over, like a hairy quilt. UGG!
Hope to try the Anti-Snap if I can find it, that sounds like what I might need. Peggie

I second the recommendation for Nioxin. DW MeanLaureen had to take low levels of oral Chemotherapy for 18 months and it wrecked havoc on her hair. It got really dry and had a gray haze over it. A salon did an intensive treatment with Nioxin and sent her home with a bottle and it made a world of difference. It might be expensive but it's worth it.

Another curly hypo hair here. I use Bumble & Bumble. I have thick curly hair and I wear it in a bob. B & B makes my hair feel so soft and I can manage it. I soften my hair with curling irons, so it takes a beating. (Yes, I said irons) It's so thick that I have to use 2 or I would spend all day styling. I don't gel but I use a pea size amount Redkin water wax when I want to separate my hair.

I did lose a massive amount of hair when I was first diagnosed. It does get better.
