My son has been selected for the National Young Scholars Program in Washington, D.C. this summer and I was wondering if there is anyone here who has had a child that was selected and who has attended the program. If so I would love to hear about your experience. It is an honor that he was selected, but I am not sure if I am ready to send my 11 year old to Washington D.C. alone for most of the summer or if the program is worth the $2,000 tuition. I would love to hear from you if you have experience with this program. Thanks.

my feeling on those "offers" are they are out for your money.
There are more opportunities for your child other than paying out mega bucks to travel far away!
Check out local colleges or universities that offer summer "Think Tank" courses for kids.

I agree with the above poster about them being out for your money. My DD started getting those 'offer's at about that age and it continued straight through high school. They selected 'her' for 'my' check... :rolleyes1

Yeah, my son was selected for that program too when he was 13. I decided against sending him AND my $1800 to Washington that summer! I thought he was too young to be sent alone anywhere for that length of time.

Not only did both of my older sons get selected for that "honor," but the son I never knew I had got invited, too. We also received an invitation with our last name and address but a first name none of us has.

If I wanted to spend $2,000 for a summer program for an 11-year-old, I would look for a really good camp. Green River Preserve in western North Carolina is excellent.

My niece got an invite for this, one of her teachers recommended her for the program. I suggested they take a family trip to DC instead of waste the money but apparently in their town this is a big deal and there are people that will donate money for kids to go so she is going :confused3 . My son is going to China for 10 days for less then this trip is costing her.

Since it said his teacher recommended him and only 5 others I thought it was a big deal, kind of sounds like it is a scam by your responses. Thanks for the information.

Save your money. Our one ds actually went to the one for high school students and his cousin went to the one you are talking about. If you have the money to blow, then sure go ahead. It did absolutely nothing to get my son into one college, as a matter of fact they rejected him. I have learned my lesson for the next 2 ds. I will use the money wisely for something else, it was my dh intentions to send him and not mine. Now he knows who had the better idea to begin with. I think we have gotten at least 5 more of those special honors and invitations in the last couple of months.
