National....what do I need to bring with me?

My drivers license, my car insurance too?

Also, if I pay with my American Express my understanding is that Amex will cover your insurance also.....is this ANY Amex - I have Blue. And I don't remember which credit card I used to book the car but I guess it is whichever card I use when I pick the car up that counts right?

One more, the reservation is in my name but can I have my husband as the driver or does it have to be me since I made the reservation.

PS. I am bringing my Emerald Isle card and will attempt to get them to allow a second driver free even though past response on these boards indicate that is not allowed. I am going to question them on this because I don't understand why not.....they should just input my number into the computer.....

All I ever bring is my confirmation,drivers license, and my Emarald Aisle card(your credit card info is on file).They have never asked for anything else. National is the only Rental Company I ever use.

You will need to check with AMEX regarding the insurance.

EC members do not have to pay for their spouse to drive the car.
If you check the website under Emerald Club, it is spelled out for you there. Not well written, but, it gets the job done. If it is not a spouse then the fee will apply. The person that makes the reservation has to pick up the car, they need to see your id. The additional driver can drive and drop off the car. If they did not have to see your ID (which does make sense) then I could see them just inputing your number into the computer.

You will need a copy of your reservation, your licence, any coupons you may have and your EC card.

I've never been asked to show my insurance card, I've rented through National several times.

I hand them the hang tag from the mirror, reservation, my license, my EC Card, my CC (National's website says they are now requiring it), my Disney Club (if I used the discount), coupon.

It's usually the Gold or Platnium cards that have insurance included but check with them. I always use my Platnium Visa.

As Gail posted, if you are an Emerald Club member, you do not have to pay the extra driver fee for your spouse. (The fee will apply if you are not an EC member).

That said, you MUST tell them when you pick up the car that your spouse will also be driving and they will want to see your spouse's driver's license in addition to yours. Don't just assume it will be OK. If you do not do this and your spouse is driving when an accident happens, National may consider him an illegal driver and you could have some hefty bills to pay because of it. At the least, there will be major hassles to endure.

Nope, it is a new feature and the number is linked to your credit card.

I just spoke (twice in the last few days) to the folks at National and they said that a spouse did not have to show anything because they are automatically covered. also, any EC member can drive any car rented from National without an additional charge. You can tell I was bugged with the wording on the EC member benefits page. They even consider live in relationships as spouse, btw.

Thank You Gail I didn't know that was a new feature. Sounds like if I want to use a different card I will need to add that to my profile.

I'll gladly take your word that that's what you were told and it may indeed be the policy now. It wasn't when we last rented according to the person who checked us out.

I don't always believe what I am told on the phone. (And like you, I think some of the things printed on websites is just downright incomprehensible)! Too many service reps just don't know all of the compay's policies and rather than ask a supervisor, they make stuff up. I'm not saying that was what happened when you called, because it is certainly possible that the policy changed since I last rented. As you may have guessed, I am definitely a little cynical about the quality/expertise of service reps for some large companies (and that includes Disney).

I am having a hard time believing that any car rental agency would allow someone to drive who did not show them a valid driver's license. To be safe, I'll be asking that it be noted on the contract when my DH & I pick up the car for our next trip. I would recommend that others do the same, but it's really JMHO.

It definitely cannot hurt to do it. One of the folks I spoke with was on the EC hotline. I really hope they know what they are talking about.

I was a member years... ago. I have no idea where my card is- is it still valid? Or, do they expire?

sln, you can call National to check if they still have you on file. If they don't perhaps you can check to see if there are any groups or promotions going on right now that offer free enrollment.
