Has anyone ever gone to Cabbage or Cable beach at Nassau? I am looking for a nice beach for just a few hours off the boat.. Cable Beach is definetly the top choice so far..Thanks

Hi! By the way my hometown is NORWICH NY :) I used to go to Greene as a kid for the Labor Day carnival....

Anyway, we have been to Cabbage beach 2 times, once without kids (on our honeymoon-different cruise line) and once with the kids. Nice local feel. People trying to sell you stuff (they will leave you alone after a few polite NO's, I think its fun to barter a little though for a little necklace or something) Cheap strong Rum drinks in fresh coconuts :) We love it. The beach is nice, and free, easy to get to (about 4 bucks per person by cab)

We recomend it especially if you want a little less touristy and a little more local feel.

Good ole Norwich..:-) Im going there Thursday... Thats good to know from someone on this board that Cabbage Beach is OK..I read some reviews and some people made it sound awful..Thanks P.S. We went to the Labor Day Fair yesterday..(Not as good as it used to be so your not missing much.) :goodvibes

We've actually gone to Cabbage Beach both times we cruised. It's a short trip (maybe 15-20 minutes) and $4 a person for the cab ride. I believe Cable Beach is a paid beach although I'm not sure how much, and about an hour away. I remember thinking it was somewhat pricey. Cabbage beach definitely has that local feel and very close to Atlantis.

We have gone to Cabbage Beach on our last 2 cruises, and are going again on our next cruise (in 2 weeks, yay!). Cabbage Beach is only 1/2 -3/4 mile down the road from Atlantis (you can see Atlantis from there). It is very easy to get to, and pretty kid-friendly (depending on what other clientele the other cruise lines bring in, that day). There actually is a resort right at Cabbage Beach, called the Sunrise Beach Club (http://www.sunrisebeachclub.com) -- they have rentals, massages, and a tiki bar right on the beach. SBC also has a restaurant/sports bar right up the stairs, but I've never gone to sneak a peek. I posted a lenghty review of our first experience here, if you care to read it: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=33662079

Cable Beach is surrounded by hotels, and I believe you have to pay one of the hotels for beach access. Search the threads here, but the last I heard, it was around $15-20 per person. One of the hotels there has a casino too, so it's a popular choice for dads who want to drop off the wife and kids at the beach, then go gamble for an hour or two... without paying the exorbitant prices at Atlantis.

A ride to either beach costs $4 per person, each way.

Cabbage beach was very nice. The coconut rum drinks were a plus too. It felt like we had the place to ourselves. The locals were not too pushy. No thanks worked for us!! Good luck to you.

We are going back Nov 2011--my ds actually liked the beach better than Castaway Cay? Go figure...:confused3

We took a cab over to Cabbage Beach. The taxi actually dropped us off at Atlantis. We worked our way towards the water and then walked down away from Atlantis to what we considered the public beach. There were plenty of beach chairs/umbrellas to rent. The waves were fun (and somewhat intimidating). If you have little ones, keep a close eye. The undertow seemed very strong.

omg we went to cabbage beach on our first cruise in 09. WORST part of the cruise. took a small boat over to atlantis while cheap they expected tips and were not very friendly. Had a hard time finding the beach, and then the locals were very pushy and would not take NO for an answer. The water got deep fast, and there was a bad under tow so the kids couldnt enjoy it. This cruise Nassau day is ship day.

We had planned on Cable Beach 2 years ago on our cruise. Couldn't find a taxi that would take us there. So we went to Cabbage and had a blast! Come to find out the taxi drivers prefer to take you closer so they can head back to port to pick up a new group. More money in the pocket for them!

We loved Cable Beach...Stayed at the then Radisson...Now I believe it is a Sheraton/Wyndham! I believe there are day passes available from the hotels!

Gorgeous calm beach!:thumbsup2 Atlantis Paradise Island Beach is much rougher! Have been at both! Atlantis is much more expensive for a day pass as well!

Enjoy!:cool1::cool1:

bumping to see if anyone has been there lately? I saw on another site that people said the water can be too rough/undertows there for little kids?

We've been to Cabbage Beach 4 or 5 times, the last time being 2010. I am a strong swimmer, but after getting in the water I did an unwanted somersault and I was having a hard time getting back out of the water. My sister-in-laws (16 and 18 then) also had a hard time, and one of them went under and couldn't regain her footing. We only stayed in the water about 5 minutes before calling it quits. If you swim out for a ways, I believe it would be a much easier current to navigate, but I am 5' tall and didn't feel safe doing so (swimming background or not). So no, I wouldn't recommend it to kids. The drop off is pretty ridiculous... I think about 10 feet from the edge of the water was 5' deep. It is absolutely gorgeous though, and if you feel like sunbathing or jet skiing (or do feel like getting past the waves and swimming), you would have a great time :).

Thanks for the info! Thinking we may just try Junkanoo Beach instead since we have 3 young kids!;)

anyone walk over to the Hilton that is visible from the ship when it is docked? How is the water there, calm or not?

Thanks for any information

Although I haven't been to the Hilton, I've been to Junkanoo which is right nearby. The waves are very minimal, and lap up on shore. I'd recommend water shoes though. The last time I was there was 2007, and I tend to remember Junkanoo had some broken glass and rocky parts... although I'm sure the Hilton keeps their beach up much better than Junkanoo :).

Cabbage Beach is really gorgeous, but the surf ripped my husband's trunks right off him. I did not go in the water at all because I can't swim. I wouldn't take my kids there.

We just got back from our cruise and we walked to Junkanoo Beach. Very easy walk a few blocks from the ship. We have 3 kids ages 12, 9 and 4 and they all had a good time there. We felt safe and the water was clean and calm. There was a little bit of glass pieces but most of them were smoothed down and not sharp. We did not wear aqua shoes and we were fine. A great beach for FREE!
