Nassau / Atlantis question

We are looking at a 4 day cruise departing Oct 13th. We've been before and this time would like to go to the Atlantis Hotel. Kids really love pool activities and I hear they have a great one. I just looked online and the excursions to the hotel seem quite pricey. Has anyone gone via taxi? Is the hotel / pool open to the public?
 
There is an excursion that allows you to use the beach & have lunch I believe. They take you to a spot & set up chairs for you. It includes transportation to the hotel. A taxi ride is apx $3-4 per person each way, or ferry for about the same and walk 2 short blocks to hotel. This does not include the pools or slides. The only way that is allowed is if you book a room. The Comfort Inn also books rooms that are cheaper than Atlantis, but allow you full use of the pools & slides. Check the Atlantis and Comfort Inn internet sites to get an idea of prices and I think the rules of use are listed there also or call the hotel direct via 800 # listed on those sites. I looked a few weeks ago for a friend and saw prices around $200-225 for a room. That way you have use of the room, bathroom, shower for the whole day. You can also do a search of these boards regarding the excursions available and what they include or see what people who have rented a room for this purpose have to say about it.
