NASA is coming out with a new ride called the Space Shuttle Launch Experience, a one-of-a-kind motion simulator that replicates the sights, sounds, "G" forces and the rattle and roll of lift-off designed to bring the mission alive.

Doesn't it sound strangly like Mission Space?

The Space center in Huntsville already had one a year and a half ago or so in their brochure we picked one up on our way through. We never went to see it though because we were on our way to the Gulf.

My understanding was that NASA helped with the idea/pictures/programming of MIssion Space, so they probably just realized how popular it has become and decided to make one for their own use/promotion.

Do you know how they produce the g-force? Surely they don't use a centrifuge. That would be way too expensive and not conducive to putting people through in a hurry.

I worked on the Gemini Mission Simulator back in the 60's. We simulated g-forces by just tilting the seat. You would not think that would produce much of a sensation, but combined with the noise and the shaking, it was pretty convincing. My brother-in-law still talks about the "ride" I put him on one night when I was making a test run on the simulator. He came out in awe.

I would like to see either one of those. Didn't know they had something like that. Certainly will be my primary stop when I get there in December.

Astronaut Hall of Fame already has the 2 rides open (when I was there July 13). A motion simulator and a g force simulator. The motion simulator was shaped like a generic space ship and did a lot of bouncing around. We did not get it in but it looked like one of those flight simulators the Navy takes to fairs. The g force ride looked like 2 port o lets on a pole and the whole thing went around like a centrifuge. The July 13th crowd was pretty intense because it was supposed to be a launch day (scrubbed) the lines were moving REALLY slow. I don't think they expect alot of traffic at Astronaut Hall of Fame on a regular day.

I was told NASA helped develop the Mission Space ride at Disney.

I would like to see that - even ride it. If they have incorporated a centrifuge into their attraction, that sounds pretty complicated.

In the year 1978, at the Huntsville Space Museum, there was a G-Force ride that projected a movie about the stars, planets, and other space stuff up on the ceiling. The ride was much more intense than M:S. I loved it. I was really hoping that M:S was going to be like that ride was only a whole lot better since it was pixie dusted. I was not impressed. The NASA ride beat out the Disney ride and that was with more than 20 years to improve upon things. Maggie

I have done the rides at the Huntsville Space Center several times and I wanted to do the ones at Kennedy but ran out of time. I also have done MS about 6 times and like it better than what I have done at Huntsville. Now, my understanding is that MS is a centrifuge type ride just like the Centrifuge at Huntsville. My wife can't handle MS at all. It makes her sick but she can handle the rides at Huntsville just fine. Go figure??

I really hope we get the Shuttle up soon and then go back to the Moon.
