Well, October is more than half done, so November is just around the corner. Anyone else doing NaNoWriMo* this year?

*National Novel Writing Month. Basically, you try to write (but not edit) a 50,000 word novel during the course of the month of November. You are not allowed to actually write any of the prose of the novel, but you can do character sketches, outlines, and so forth before November 1.

Sounds pretty cool. What are you considering for a novel?

No clue. I did okay the first year, and less well the second, third and forth years - the latter two required rediculous amounts of word padding. The first year was a superhero book, the second a novel about a writer, and I don't even recall what last years book was about, other than 50,000 words of garbage.

I'm toying with trying fantasy this year - I have a couple ideas for the magic system, and I wanted to do something different with dwarves, elves, etc.

My girlfriend insisted that I am to be her "writing buddy" for this. I made the mistake of telling her one of my many novel ideas, now I'm going to have to own up to it. It will be fantasy...alternative history, really. I like that sort of thing.

I actually wrote 2 "short stories" over 70,000 words last year, so this shouldn't be too hard...but getting it done in a month, I dunno. Getting started is always the hard part.

I've been debating doing this for about a month. I even have a vague idea of what I want to write about. I just don't know if I want to commit to it or not. I have some other projects I want to do in November and I just am on the fence about NaNoWriMo.

Never heard of this, more info please?

(Paraphrased from the NaNoWriMo (dot org) website):

NaNoWriMo is when people challenge themselves to write a 175-page (50,000 word) novel during the month of November. Due to time constraints, quantity is the only thing that matters - there should be no effort made to ensure a high quality manuscript. Sentence fragments, typos, aborted paragraphs or plot lines, and the like are all perfectly acceptable.

It starts at 12:01 am on Nov 1, and ends at midnight on the 30th. You can write about anything you want, more or less, as long as it is an original work of fiction. There may be some rules against writing in an already established universe - so no Twilight, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc fanfic.

The originator, Chris Baty, wrote a book ("No Plot, No Problem", I believe) that serves as a guide to the month of November. Your library may have it, as would your local bookstore.
