names you HATE

I like my name, but usually it's associated with exotic dancers.

Seriously, we did a google image search and my name had hundreds of "entertainer" pictures.

The name is lovely really & the child was beautiful. But on a flight to Orlando in either 1988 or 1991 (can't remember), the name was DRILLED into DH & my head at least 1000 times. A few rows ahead of us on a smaller than normal plane, this mother, in a calm unathoratative voice every 15 seconds to this unruly child was like,
"Ashley honey, please sit down"
"Ashley honey, please don't kick me."
"Ashley honey, please don't throw your toys"
"Ashley honey, please put that back"
.................................

From then on, everytime DH & I hear, "Ashley", we looked at each other & laugh & say "ashley honey".

There. I'm sure NO ONE is offended....unless you are Ashley Honey's mom.

When I think of "an overly large woman", Bertha comes to mind. I don't know why. I love the song Bertha by the Grateful Dead so I also think of that song and it makes me happy.

OH no...I dont think anyone will post their real thoughts. My Daughter's names are sorta "trendy" I guess, but I love them . If I saw that someone named them then I WOULD be offended. Mine on the other hand, you can hate..lol.

There are no names I "hate" and wouldn't post if I did. I agree this is a good way to hurt someone's feelings although mine wouldn't be hurt if my name was mentioned.

The exact thing happened to me a month ago on our plane from MCO. Only, his name was Connor. Within 3 minutes, I told my son, "We'll have to listen to this the whole way home". And we did !!!!!!!!!!!!

The names I hate (not the people associated with them, just the names) are when girls are given boy's names. Double hate points for any name that has an unnecessary "y" added in.

I'm not going to get offeneded if my name shows up. I don't really dislike names. I dislike things that are not names being made into names. Apple for instance. (who does that?!)

I agree with this, and have to add that we all have a different definition of what's not a name. Personally, when I hear Cheyenne I think of a city in Wyoming and when I hear Dakota I think "North or South?".

To me those aren't people names, they are place names, but Dakota is a pretty popular name for kids these days, so obviously not everyone agrees with me, and that's fine. It'd be awful if everyone had the same taste in names and there were 15 Sarahs and 15 Matthews in every class at school.

Anyhoo, I wouldn't be offended if my name or my kids' names showed up, either. My older dd has a name that people either love or hate. When people say they hate it, I'm not offended, I think "what's wrong with them?" , because to me, it's beautiful!

See! My mom wanted a unique name and she didn't know any other Amber's when I was born (1981). Little did she know that people were using it as their stage name.

She did want to name me Heidi or January and my dad talked her out of those.

I like my name and no one would mistake me for a stripper.

I don't think it would offend me if any of my favorite names appeared here. Just like everything else, people have different opinions & tastes.

I notice around here, everyone changes the spelling of common names to be unique and I can never remember the correct spelling. I was recently filling out invitations to my sons birthday party and I know I spelled most of my cousins kids names wrong. One is Maya, which should be easy but I think it is Mayah or Maghya...it is something really out there. When I asked why they chose that spelling, they said that wanted to make it easier for people to pronounce. That was a head scratcher for me but whatever floats your boat. I'm positive there are people out there that don't like the names I chose for my kids.

Okay, I'll play. The name I hate the most is my own: Morgan.

I hate it. Hate it. But I've gotten used to it, so I've never changed it.

But parents, I IMPLORE you, think about the consquences of naming your child a certain name. When I was born Morgan was more of a boys name than a girls. My mom would sign me up for things and I'd show up and be assigned to the boys group because they'd just go by my name.

And I don't even know if the DIS would let me post the mean thing kids in HS called me.. lets just say take the "n" off my name and add an "sm".

I don't like common, traditional names that are purposely misspelled to make them different or trendy. That's my biggest name dislike.
