Names in the door?

I love the looks of the magnets on the doors and I can't wait to decorate ours. All my life and especially my sons lives I have been told not to personalize anything with their names so strangers can never act like they know them. So am I weird to not want to put our names on the door? Even our last name?
I have never heard of anything like a pedophile getting to any children on a disney cruise but I'm still scared. Is it just me? :confused3

Rest assured, you're not the only one. I have the same philosophy and won't be personalizing our doors with any of our names as well. People with evil intentions lurk everywhere just waiting for an opportunity. You are the parent and it is your choice how you choose protect your children and no one should judge you for it.

I totally agree with the above. You do what makes YOU comfortable. I've sometimes wondered at the amount of personal info some people share on their doors--past cruises, future cruises planned, names, birthdates, etc.

Thanks everyone. I felt like I was being paranoid but I just wasn't comfortable with it. I know my sons would love to see their names but I just don't think I can do it.

You can print out magnets with their names on them and then place them on the inside of your cabin door -- it's magnetic on that side, too. :goodvibes

We're only doing Stateroom door Mickey ears. The whole name thing creeps me out, too. But to each his own.

I'm a Mom who is overprotective, paranoid and sometimes downright crazy about safety. I admit it.... and I decorated our door with magnets that had our first and last names. (Not together, but one said "The ... Family" and the others had first names.) I was mildly worried about it, but decided to take a breath and have a little fun. We had zero problems. The kids had wrist bands for the Kids Club that had their fiirst and last names on it, which was more of a concern to me. (Still no problems!) Several times, we opened our door to leave and there were people standing in the hall admiring the magnets. I think safety is always something to consider, but in this case I think you're good to go. Have fun with it!!! :goodvibes

We have our names on most of our magnets. I started "personalizing" them when I heard on the boards about how many magnets were stolen from doors that were "generic".

I have the same concerns, but my view is that creeps have many ways other than looking at your door if they want to stalk you or your kids. It really just boils down to personal preference and your comfort level.

Just my opinion...

I was thinking the same thing and wondered if I was the only one. I also wanted to make an FE and wondered about putting our names on that too. I think what I decided is to personalize with first names, but not our last name. IDK I am still so torn about it. My DH is more paranoid than me so he may say no to personalization. I just don't want all the magnets/FE that I put time and money into stolen because they weren't personalized.

Anyone know how often "stealing" of non-personalized magnets actually occurs??

On our 4 day Wonder cruise in the Bahamas last November, the family in the stateroom next to us had a dry erase board on their door. They left notes for each other regarding where they were, what they were doing, and when they would be back. If someone wanted to, they could have very easily found one of their kids, known his or her name, and told them that their parents (with their names) sent them for them.

DH and I commented how we could not believe how public families were with information that seemed like something that should not be public knowledge.

Simply because you are on a cruise ship does not mean that everyone onboard is your (and your kids') friend. Please use caution with what information you share on your door. If you would put a note on the front door of your house saying, "Hey, my 11 year old daughter named Tulula will be at the pool with no parents for the next hour and here's a photo of what she looks like!" why put it on your stateroom door?

We are not cruising with our children or our grand children and I still refuse to put our names on the door or FE. We have had our identity stolen once before and I am not going to make it easy for anyone in the future. Wonderful decorations can be done without the names.party:

Good point about the dry erase board! I was considering taking one on our cruise since we will have two staterooms. I think I'll just put it on the inside of the girls' door though since DH and I will get keys to both rooms. I figure with that and the wave phones we should have our communication covered.

You can decorate your doors without putting names on them. You do run the risk of having them taken. You could just put the room numberr on them that might help prevent them from being taken. We have in the past put names on our door decorations and not had any problem. My grandaughters are old enough to know not to go with anyone just because they know their name. I can understan your consern and would just not put your names on anything. I was raised in a much safer time (or at least we thought it was) and also raised my children when it was still safe to allow them out of the house by themselves. It is sometimes hard for me to remember that those times have gone. My grandaughters do have very strick rules to follow when they are traveling with me. They are either in the clubs, they cabin or with us, and they are not allowed to go in to anyones cabin or bring anyone into our cabin. Weather you decide to decorate your cabin door or not I hope you have a great time on your cruise, have fun.

The Wonder, despite all it technology and cameras, "LOST" a CM last month. You'd have to be insane to make it any easier to have a child "LOST." The kids are looking to you to protect them. Post you're names. Leave the kids alone.

Does the DCL not put your names on the outside of the door anyway? I've never taken a Disney Cruise, but when we went on our Princess Cruise, they had a little spot on the wall by our cabin that had both our names printed out and on there. I guess I thought that was the norm for any cruise line. Maybe I was supposed to take our names off once we checked in and found our room? It never occurred to me at the time that everyone could see our names and that maybe I didn't want it to be so public.

I think everyone should do whatever they are comfortable with... put your name, picture, date of birth, social security number, bank account, whatever you want... we're not criminals so it's of no interest to us :rotfl2:

I've read about putting names and stateroom numbers on the back for retrieval should some bored teens decide to dump them somewhere (seriously, bored on a cruise??? who ARE these kids?!?!?)

At any rate, we have decided to be announced onboard as the Swiss Family Robinson, since one of my kids shares a name of the character in the movie, and we'll be keeping that pseudonym throughout our stay, as appropriate. I'm making our FE without our personal names (just SFR) and only our FE friends will 'really' know who we are.

We're hoping that our small measures will be a good compromise between having some fun but being mindful of our surroundings as well :)

Great post and glad to see it -- I thought I was being silly, the community of cruisers seem SOOOO welcoming and warm that it's easy to think it's ok to lighten up our usual safety measures :)

No, DCL doesn't do that. That would bother me and I would ask to take it down. My husband would roll his eyes at me, but that's just too bad.

If you're worried about people in your FE group not knowing which child is which (because they might have different gifts that are age appropriate for each child), then you might put DD7, DS10 or whatever so that people in your FE group know which pocket is which. ;)

Each family member could come up with Cruise Ship Names in advance. That way, you could "personalize" the door with made-up names (so the security concern would be less) and the kids would still get a kick out of seeing "their" names on the door.

You could turn it into a grand game if you want -- maybe keep a tally of each time someone accidentally called the other one by the "real" name, and the person who had the fewest accidents by the end of the cruise can pick out an extra souvenier from the gift shop or something.

Might be fun!
