Hi,

Recently had the Filete Motuleno at San Angel Inn. I love hot food and all, but I took one bite into the skinny brown/red pepper located on the right of the picture below. My face hurt, my mouth and throat were on fire. I asked the waiter what it was called but couldn't really understand him with his accent.

Anyone know the name of that hot pepper?

Link doesn't work.

If it is long and skinny probably a cayenne or serrano. Round habenero but I can't imagine any restaurant putting one whole on a plate. Shorter at fatter jalepeno.

B.

Link not working, but it also sounds like a roasted Poblano Pepper. They are in the mid heat range, but spiciness in food is very relative.

OK Def. not habanero...I have no idea what it is.

I also couldn't imagine them putting a whole habanero on a plate anyway, lol

It looks like a cayanne, but having had cayanne sauce, and everything, this was much more intense. and the waiter did not say "cayanne pepper" when asked....

I love hot stuff......i eat suicide wings and put hot sauce on everything.....but this just plain ol' hurt!

It's a chili de arbol which translates to chili of the tree. Hotter than a poblano.

It was probably some kind of chilli, maybe a scotch bonnet. They're supposed to blow your head off!

Just looked that up in google and looks like it! Sounds like what the waiter said too! Holy Hotness!! careful with this one....it packs a punch!!

"50,000-65,000 on the scoville heat unit scale or about 8 on a 1-10 scale"

I can only eat them if I have it combined with some food; I can't imagine putting one by itself in my mouth.

The scene from Dumb and Dumber when they eat the hot peppers is what kept running through my mind as I suffered for a good 5-10 minutes :lmao:

Dang, I'm at work in a very quiet office. This made me laugh out loud.

Definitely a variety of chili pepper.

Next time ask for milk. Milk will neutralize the capsaicin (the stuff that causes the burn) in peppers. It won't get rid of the burn completely, but it will definitely make it better. :goodvibes

While it's really hard to tell from the photo, it looks like either chile de arbol or a puya chile

Or something with honey - does the same thing. That's why so many Mexican desserts have either a milk (flan) or honey (sopapillas with honey) base.

I don't believe it's a scotch bonnet. They look very similar to the habanero. Actually I believe it's in the habanero family. Definitely just as hot. It's short and round. the chile pictured is long and skinny. It can't be a ghost pepper. That could seriously hurt you if you ate it straight.
