N.J. Substitute Teacher Charged With Choking Child

NEWARK, N.J. -- A New Jersey substitute teacher accused of choking a student with a string is facing assault charges.

Officials in the Newark public school district say it happened Monday in an after-school program. They said teacher Albert Coleman, 59, was fired immediately. He's accused of tightening the string around the neck of a second-grade boy who didn't do his homework.

Authorities said Coleman reportedly had told the boy he would strangle him if he didn't do his homework. And police said when the boy didn't, the teacher had him stand on a chair and wrapped the string from a ceiling light around his neck.

Police said a school secretary later saw the child putting water on his bruised neck.

School spokeswoman Carol Patterson Brooks said the district apologized to the family.


I really don't get the thought processes of people who actually think this is an ok thing to do.

If the world were to judge an entire state on the actions of one warped individual, it would be a pretty sad world.


Katalin and Gabor Deli, who for 20 years prior had built up the women's gymnastics program at the University of Minnesota, were fired in 1992 for 10 NCAA violations, including giving a team member a bicycle and instructing student-athletes to lie about how much time they trained at Deli's private gym.

However, the Deli's dilemma started after the women's gymnastics team accidentally viewed a recording of the Deli's having sex in a hotel room. The recording was at the end of a training tape.

OMG Remind me to never enrole my daughters in Gymnastics!!!

When I was in grammar school, a hundred years ago , my 4th grade teacher would grab us by the chin and shake it a vigorously, rattling your teeth, never mind scaring the life out of you. Can you believe that??? Those were the days when parents took the word of the teacher as gospel. I think back on that now and think as a parent I would have been in her face for doing that to my child... but then it was allowed as parents did not question..

Questioning is good, people have to be responsible for their actions.. inexcusable to put your hands on a child in that manner.

OMG! That poor little boy! School should be a fun place where learning is an exciting thing. SHAME on that man, I too hope he gets more than just fired.


Side note, I know all too well about people judging you about the state you live in regarding notorious people. Wisconsinites have had more than their share of weirdos and I wish they would go away and stop giving our state a bad name. This is a beautiful state with many, many, wonderful things!

I do live in NJ and that scares me. Of course I'm sure it could happen anywhere.

What was the one I saw on the news last night about a teacher who hung 2 students from coat hooks. One was hung from his coat, the other from his pants. These were kindergarteners!

I wish more people on this board would practice what they preach.

Oh my goodness. I would personally find these people and hurt them if they ever laid a hand on my kids. I am a very calm person but when it comes to my kids watch out.

if you are going to condemn an entire state based on the actions of one sick individual, then the USA is not a good place to live, I'm sure if you do a search online you will find more than one shocking story for every state.

It was a terrible thing that happened. Obviously this was a sick individual. Gymnasticsmom is your state so insulated there are no sick individuals allowed in? You have no prisons or mental health facilities?

I wouldn't hold your breath for a response. It's unfortunate for that to happen anywhere, but saying something like that about a whole state is just very unfair. People who've never been to NJ don't realize what a great place this is. It's their loss.

I live in Pennsylvania and we make a lot of "New Jersey" jokes. Probably not a nice thing to do, but I think it goes the same for New Jersey folk making jokes too.

Maybe gym.mom was just kidding???? I hope so anyway.

Kind of a bad joke, but jeesh, I don't think anyone is so insulated as to think this kind of thing can't happen in any state.

I say with all due respect, lighten up people!

Now as far as what this sub. teacher did, he should be prosecuted for child abuse. That's unacceptable and awful. That poor child.

My first-grade teacher would rarely let anyone go to the bathroom--I will never forget seeing a boy sitting in his own pee crying at his desk (and that was 36 years ago).

She also used to shake us, hurl us into walls and other nice stuff.

The principal excused her behavior to my parents by saying she had MS. Don't care what she had, she was a monster who did not belong around children.
