We will be taking our first trip home in April.
I will be getting an AP for myself as I am returning for F&W in Oct.
My question is, if I buy 7 day MYW tickets for my wife and one son and they decide to go back next March can I stil upgrade to AP's even if their are no days left and they have expired?
Any and all help or advice is greatly apprciated.

if there are no days left there is nothing to upgrade. you no longer have a ticket if it's used up. if u have days left but did not get the no expiration option and it is past 14 days then you cannot upgrade.

Even with the non-expiration, tickets are no longer upgradeable after the 14 day window.

snacky i didn't know that. thought if you had days left even after 14 days you could still upgrade your days. good to know

Even if you have no days left on a ticket but it is still within the 14 days from first use you can upgrade.

It is the difference between "no entitlements" which means that all purchased entries have been used and "expired" which means that the ticket is no longer valid.

For example, if you had a five day ticket and used all five days (all entitlements) and then found due to a major snowstorm your airport at home would be closed and due to this (misfortune??) you would have to stay at WDW for two extra days. You could take these completely used but not expired tickets to a ticket window and just pay the price to upgrade them from five to seven days instead of buying new two day tickets.

Thank you all for the fast and informative answers.
If I understand correctley, even with the "no expiration" option if there are no days left it doesnt matter. However if I were to have one day left and the "no expiration" we would then be able to upgrade to AP's.

Whether or not you have the non-expiration option, tickets can ONLY be upgraded within 14 days of the first use of the ticket.

So let's say you start using a ticket on January 1. You can upgrade that ticket ANYTIME until January 14. If you had a 2 day ticket, and used up both days and on January 13th decided you wanted to upgrade, you could do it.

On January 15th - that ticket is WORTHLESS for upgrading purposes. Even if it has the non-expiration option - that ticket you first used on January 1st MUST be used as is beginning on January 15th.

Think of it this way: When you start using a Magic Your Way ticket, you have 14 days to change your mind and select a different kind of ticket. (Or I could say 14 days to decide exactly in what way you want your magic.)

(No change is returned if you "bought too much ticket" to begin with.)

You can still change your mind (add more days, etc.) if the ticket is used up before the 14 days have passed.
