MYW Package with AP??

So, we currently have a MYW package booked that includes the free dining plan. Am I correct in assuming if we were considering purchasing an AP that would start the day we arrived on our next trip, we would have to cancel this package and book a room-only/buy the AP separately/pay for dining? Or does anyone have any ideas for trying to incorporate the two? Ideally, it would be very cool if we could keep the package/free dining and "upgrade" the 5-day base tickets in our package by just paying the difference for the AP? But I'm assuming once you have an AP, booking a MYW package is no longer an option, right (i.e. it would be smarter for us to just keep the current package w/free dining and then buy an AP starting with our next trip and just try to get a room-only discount/do everything a la carte?) TIA if anyone can help, so I don't have to call Disney to answer another question AGAIN today ;)

You can upgrade your park tickets to APs at Guest Relations at any of the parks or Downtown Disney. You could also purchase APs now and not use the park tickets and apply them as a credit toward AP renewal in the future.

Ditto and ditto. ;)

What they said! ;)

But keep in mind the AP expiration will be the first day (plus a year obviously) you entered a park on your package (not the day you upgraded to APs). So if you used your package on the the 1st but didn't upgrade till the 5th, the AP still started on the 1st.

Thanks for the responses, that makes me happy!! Would you mind explaining a little more in detail what the latter option entails? What would be the benefit of doing this (holding onto the tickets from the MYW package) vs just upgrading when I get there this next trip? And how exactly would one apply actual tickets to getting an AP renewal?? You can't trade them in for "credit," right, because they're nonrefundable? Sorry for the all the questions - I think I'm making this more complicated than it actually is ;)

Aha, thanks for the tip! (So basically if we have tickets for the day we arrive, we best hightail it over to Guest Relations to upgrade that first day, in order to maximize the benefit, yes?)

That'll work.

The main advantage is for people that already have an AP and want to book a free dining package. Since the package required a min 2 day ticket purchase that they don't need, they save it and apply the value as a credit toward their AP renewal. Disney does not refund tickets for cash, but you can apply the cash value as a credit toward the purchase of a more expensive ticket. The other time it comes in handy is if you have a ticket already purchased not as part of a package and you want to extend your trip and make additional FP+ selections in advance. In this case, buying an AP and using the original ticket as a credit in the future is more economical than buying a second ticket. You can also wait and upgrade your original ticket when you get there, but you cannot make additional FP+ selections until you do.

For discounts and stuff, yes definitely. If you aren't into shopping, then you can wait a bit and do it when it is convenient.

 I think I need to take the weekend to digest all of this before I attempt to try to actually think all this through because my head is spinning now with details, and this has been a LONG week!! Thanks so much for the suggestions/explanations!
