Mystery Woman w/Teddy Bears at Grand Floridian Mystery Solved!!

Priceless!

January 31, 2009

Okay, since some of you enjoyed the first story about my sister, Lynn, here is one of my favorites.

Lynn is VERY picky about going to see any doctor, so she just has one, that she jokes about, saying that she has gotten him 'trained' to where she only has to go in once a year now to get her blood pressure checked, so he will refill her yearly supply of blood pressure meds. They both like to joke around with each other, as Lynn has a Great sense of humor. You will see that the doctor does as well! : )

One day (at the end of the year) she walked into his office and saw the doctor standing by the nurses' desk, with a bandadge on his throat. She walked over to say hello and asked him what happened to his neck.

Without missing a beat, the doctor replied, "I saw your name on the list of patients today and slit my throat!"

I thought that was just hilarious!!! Hope you enjoy it as well. Just wish I could remember what Lynn's reply was back to the doctor! If you see her, ask her!! : )

:rotfl: I love it! You've cheered me up.
Thanks! I am so glad the story about Lynn was able to cheer you up! Heaven knows, with the world the way it is today, and the problems in our country, we all need all of the cheering up we can get.

Think Happy!

What a great story!!! That really made me laugh!!

My dh is 42 and has needed glasses to read for 2 years, and he literally just put them on for the first time yesterday! They've been sitting in their case for 2 years, because he just didn't want to give in to the fact he needs glasses. My mom (in her 60's) does the same thing for years now. She can't see anything close w/out them, but never ever has them with her. I guess a lot of people are like that :)
I just hate eyeglasses, too, but I hate NOT being able to see even worse! : )

I'm glad you liked the story about Lynn.

Best Wishes,

Joan 1/31/09

Hi Tracy.

We leave tomorrow for a week at Disney (2 Days at Animal Kingdom Villas, and the rest at the Grand Floridian), I will be sure to say hi to your sister every day.

For those of you that are wondering, she sits in an end chair behind the half wall next to the piano player.
I hope you all have a wonderful time at Disney. (Is it even possible NOT to?!)

Thanks for telling people just where Lynn sits, so they can go say hello if they like. I know Lynn would like to meet all of you guys!!

Best Wishes,

Joan 1/31/09

We stayed there in May and saw her a couple of times in the lobby. I think she just adds to the charm of the place.
Thank you, Chris. That is very kind of you to say. I hope you will stop and speak to her whenever you see her.

Best Wishes,

Hi Tracy! I've only been to the GF once. Last year we went for tea, but I didn't see your sister. I had read about her here on the DIS though, so I was keeping an eye out for her. From what I read, I thought she sounded very sweet. Thanks for coming here and sharing stories with all of us! And personally, I think your sis is one smart lady... If I lived in the WDW area, I'd want to be visiting my favorite Disney resorts too as much as I could! :cool1:

I hope to be back at the GF for tea again in April, and will say hello if I see her. If not, please pass on a "Hi" to her for me. I'm a bear lover myself. :goodvibes

I was at the Grand Floridian this week, and had never heard about Lynn before. I just sat down on the couch while having a drink. Like I always do on vacation, I struck up a conversation with the lady on the end of the seating area. She was very cordial and funny. She told me she enjoys spending the day meeting people in a safe place. Ss she told me she was very lonely since her husband died, so a friend drops her off every day. She said she was aware of people on the internet who say bad things about her, but she knows there are always "those kind of people" in the world. I found her to be funny and cordial, but also sad since she is so lonely. I'm glad I took a few minutes to chat with her

Welcome to the DIS. :)

I'm sorry to hear that Lynn is so lonely. I hope that spending time in the Grand Floridian and meeting a few people helps a bit.

I met Lynn .... !!!!
My 4 yr old DD and I were at the GF on my Birthday (the 25th) for dinner with Cinderella.
We checked in and she saw the penny press..so I told her that we would go potty then we would go to the shop to buy something so we would have change and would stop on the way out.
Well while in the bathroom a lady came in and she told DD how much she liked her hair and the beautiful bows she had on.And then told her that she was a beautiful little girl. Then she turned to me and said ... OH IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY... HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOUNG LADY!! I said thank you so much.We have had a wonderful day and now we are going to dinner with Cinderella. She said to have a nice time. And I thanked her once again...I didn't know this was her until we were on our way back to 1900 Park Fare for dinner. She was sitting alone in the lobby listening to the music and had a lot of teddy bears with her in a bag on a chair.DD walks by and told her she liked her bears a lot.She responded with and I like your bows a lot too.DD said thank you and skipped off telling me about the nice lady and her bears.

Ahhh...I am glad that I can now say that I have "met" her and she is a very nice lady :)

Tracy, I believe it was my post #43 that you were referring to, so I will respond.

I am glad to know your sister is neither homeless nor mentally ill. For the record, I am not homeless either. I think it is fair to say that a 67 year old woman sitting in the lobby of a hotel with bags of teddy bears (and presumably her own - I haven't ever seen a reference to her giving them out to children and that would have totally changed my opinion of the situation as I knew it then) is, as you say, hearing to the beat of a different drummer.

Whether I think it is appropriate for her to be there or not (and for the record I still don't - I do NOT belive the lobby of a hotel is a public place, and said so in my original post), I am glad to know that she is welcomed by the staff and that she enjoys the visits.

If you are happy with your sister visiting the GF and the staff is willing to have her visit, then that answers the question about this specific situation. I'll be in Florida next week and if I see your sister in the lobby on the day I haver ADRs at Narcoossee's, I will smile and say hello.:goodvibes

I don't understand your logic!:sad2: :sad2: Disney goes out of their way to get people to visit the hotel lobby's. Have you ever seen the lobby's at christmas time? Gaylord Palms does special events to try and get people to come over there. I'm thinking you may have hotels and country clubs mixed up.;)

Thank you so much, Robin, first, for letting me know your name, and for what you said about the needless unkind things said about my sister. I think many people either have too much time on their hands, or never learned what we were taught as kids, "If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all." Very wise words. The other old saying that "Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never hurt you" has proven to be so wrong, it is pathetic. Kids bully other kids, then the bullied kids at times committ suicide and or kill other kids at their schools, all because of unnecessary cruel words. When will our society learn to undo these kinds of things? Sooner than later, I hope, for the kids' sakes and everyones.

Thanks again for your kind words.

Joan

I have stayed at the GF and have not had the pleasure to meet Lynn. Next month when I'm there I will make a point of meeting her.:goodvibes

Yes, Brain, you are correct

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1657051&referrerid=93883

I stand by what I said on that thread - she is not an attraction in an amusement park and none of us have the right to demand her story. It was kind of her sister to come here and clarify, but it wasn't required that she do so.

Hopefully her sister will continue to find peace and pleasure in a place where so many do.

Amen!:thumbsup2

Tracy J,

We (myself, DD9, and DM) encountered your sister on our last visit while waiting for our tea time reservation at the Grand Floridian. My DD9 was in quite a mood that day...she has ADHD and sometimes the norepinephrine in her brain, even with medication, just makes her practically headstrong and not very social. The time she spent playing bears with your sister (almost a half hour) calmed her and transformed her into a different child. Somewhere I have pictures from that encounter and if I can find them, I will PM them to you. I never knew that your sister was a bit of a fixture in the place until I read this thread. Thank you so much for taking the time out to explain and I'm sorry that some people look down their noses and don't take the time to see the good in life.

Okay, here is a story I promised about Lynn. She and Bruce were in the Kingdom one day, and while Lynn was resting on a bench, Bruce went to get them both something to drink. While Bruce was gone, Lynn noticed a man across the way staring at her. He never looked away, just kept staring. It started making Lynn VERY uncomfortable, as it would any woman, and she thought about calling Security, but Bruce finally arrived back with the drinks. Lynn immediately told him about the man and told him where he still was. Bruce looked and said, "Lynn, the ONLY thing over there is a Statue!! (Lynn has always been rather vain about wearing eye glasses.) I would have given almost ANYTHING if Lynn has just gone ahead before Bruce got back and called security!!! LOL!! : )

Hope you enjoyed this story. I have a few more. BTW, sorry, but I have no idea about Bruce and where he got his haircuts, since I wasn't there. Is that where you get yours?

Best Wishes,
Joan

Those are great stories Joan! Thanks:goodvibes

Thank you Tracy for sharing your story with us. I would like to meet Lynn on our next trip. Does she like company? She must know by now she is a DIS star! I think its wonderful that she has found a place she feels comfortable. Some times I wonder what life will be like when my children move away. Dh is almost 9 years older than me, I pray I will find a special place someday like your sister has.

How touching! I know I'd happily go sit in the lobby of the GF someday. I don't blame her one bit. Even if it wasn't to bring back memories, just the beauty of the place would be enough to prompt me to go. Why not immerse oneself in the gorgeous surroundings? It doesn't get much better than that.

I'll be there at the end of November, and I'll look out for Lynn! I hope to get the chance to meet her.

Yep, me too! :cloud9:

What great stories of Lynn. I hope one day I will get to chat with her.

I saw her back in June. She looks like such a nice lady. She was busy talking, otherwise I would've went up and said 'Hi.'

I spoke with her in April, she was very nice. We watched as a bride was having her picture taken. Lynn told me about some of the weddings she has seen and the wedding parties getting ready and having pictures taken. She seemed excited to share her stories.
