Mysterious Building in Epcot

From my 1994 Birnbaum's guide:

"This handsome hexagonally shaped establishment looks less like a fast food eatery than a moderately fancy sit-down restaurant.
That's partly because of the decor, a subtle amalgam of rusts and ochres, with a carpeted floor and walls and a profusion of green plants. It's also partly because the food serivce lines are tucked away from the main dining area.
The fact that tables are spread over several levels enhances the already pleasant ambience by making the whole place feel smaller than it reall is. There's never the feeling of having arrived in a cavernous mess hall.
As for the menu, it's absolutely all-American: burgers, hot dogs, plus platters of chicken, tuna and ambrosia salads. Freshly baked pies are a special treat.
There are character shows featured here four times each day."

The Odyssey restaurant closed in 1996.

I also have to respectfully disagree with Bimmy56. I was there in 89 and it was still open. We ate there every trip. I believe it closed in the early to mid 90's.

Yes, there was, and it was one of the few places where you could meet both Mickey and Minnie. The characters were dressed in "space" garb too in silly silver shiny outfits.

I remember eating lunch there during my first visit to Disney in "89. Mickey and Minnie were there, in ordinary garb, as`well as Chip n Dale, and other assorted characters. It was a little bit better than fast food, but a nice place to take a break and look at the flamingos.

In 1993 we enjoyed a character lunch at the Odyssey! The menu was mostly burgers and such. Mickey, Minnie and Goofy visited our table. There may have been other characters, I don't remember. The big thing I remember is not needing a reservation and being able to walk in eat and visit with characters. Now you need reservations months out at most character meals. Wow...how things have changed.

Occasionally we have noticed it being used for groups. Even on NYE there was a quick private gathering in there. The attendees were given hats and horns. (That many Epcot guests did not have. Not that many were handed out, in comparison to the number of guests. They went fast with maybe 1/3 of the guests receiving any.)

We have seen the building also used during Food & Wine fest. They presented cooking demonstrations in there.

I am sure the Olyssey building gets used regularly. But only for special occasions evidently.

I went to some cooking demostrations there last year during the food and wine festival.

I remember I ate there circa 1995 I was a little thing then but I remember it.

I used to want to be a animator for WDW back then and I was drawing a picture of a butterfly on my napkin pretending to be an animator and I was eating my chicken fingers and a man walked up to me and told me that it was a very nice butterfly coinsidence has it that he was an animator for WDW and had worked on animating The Lion King. He drew me a picture of my favourite character from the Lion King of the time "Ed." I still have it :goodvibes

Wow! What a great story! You have a mom of an animator-wannabe that would be so jealous!! :wizard:

During the late 1990s it was also used for Food Among The Flowers brunch on weekends during the Flower and Garden Festival. They don't do that anymore :( I attended these brunches twice. Once they had a live band performing showtunes, and the other time a harpist playing relaxing music.
