Myrtle Beach

We are considering driving from Charlotte NC to Myrtle Beach for spring break next year. It's April 18-April 22, 2011. We have never been there before and would appreciate any recommendations on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do. Overall, is it pricey? Family friendly? Good beach areas?

BTW, our party will consist of two adults, two kids ages 8 and 5 and two grandparents.

Yes it is family friendly and fun. I would stay on the northern end of Myrtle Beach. If you want a hotel, I recommend the Ocean Reef resort. It is on a great stretch of wide beach in a very family friendly section that is clean and nice. This place has hotel rooms and condos.

Another great place a little farther north is the Royale Palm by Hilton. It is connected to the Hilton hotel and is all condos. There is a walkway that goes all the way to the Apache Pier and it is fun to go out on.

Both of these are directly on the beach which is great for kids and grandparents alike.

Eat at the Chesapeake House. It is on the expensive side, but the food is well worth it if you want great seafood. Many other less expensive places to eat also.

The last two times we stayed at a hotel there we stayed at the Ocean Reef Resort- LOVE IT !! I couldn't believe how inexpensive it was too- we got it for about 140 a night in the middle of the summer- you cant even stay at our local crappy hilton in the middle of no where here for that little!

stay- Dunes Village Resort-comes with its own washer/dryer which we found VERY convenient.

eat-River City Cafe or anywhere at Broadway at the Beach(Joes Crab shack, Senor Frogs, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock). Just dont eat at NASCAR cafe, Yuck.

Family friendly for sure. So may good places to eat that you can't walk 100 feet w/o one, it feels like. Make sure you visit Broadway at the Beach for the fun, but touristy stuff.

My fave place to eat is in NORTH Myrtle Beach... called Hamburger Joe's... where, I have never actually had a hamburger. It is a tiny hole in the wall place near Barefoot Landing .... almost directly across rte 17.

It's a dive place, but safe, and fun.... and you can get a fried bologna sandwich, and good wings.

Lots of good values to be found.... but you can also go SKY HIGH for restaurants. Just my opinion, but stay away from the all you can eat seafood places... the couple I have been to are HORRIBLE.

We are going in March for our honeymoon and staying at the Compass Cove Resort. Our 2 bedroom Penthouse rents for $129 a night the week we are going. Check it out, it has lots of water activities for the kids!

Another vote here for Hamburger Joe's. It's not fancy by any means, but delicious and a good family place.

We go there about every other year with my parents and our two kids (now 5 and 6). We like the slower pace of North Myrtle Beach for the family, and usually rent from Condolux and get a multi-bedroom condo style unit for a decent price. We usually go during the offseason though.

I second River City Cafe. Yum!!!!!

I stayed at the Avista Resort last year (May, got a deal on TravelZoo on a 1 BR oceanfront for about $75/night). It was windy around the pool due to the shape of the building, but it was still nice. They have a small indoor pool and lazy river.

Don't any of you drive over to Calabash for seafood? It's the best!!!
